Made a start on putting it back together, the wiring was a bit messy so I removed the black sticky tape and fitted braid finished with self-amalgamating tape. I spent a lot of time routing the wiring harness to make it look neat, I'm happy with the end result!

I did a bit more work on it today (Covid-19 lock-down is not all bad). I fitted the throttle cables and exhaust pipe, note the heat guards held in place with lock-wire to check placement. The guards are stainless steel and were cut by water-jet, I will bend a curve on the top and bottom and weld nuts on the pipes to fix them in place. Next job sort the rear fender.

Just about finished now, took it for a little test ride yesterday all seems good! The ride was a bit harsh but I'm used to riding a modern Triumph!

Great looking scrambler.
Not that these old bikes came with great suspension, but a harsh ride could indicate that it is over sprung or over damped.

Great job. The bike looks fantastic Pookie.

As for the shocks... they look like the same aftermarket ones I had a few years ago. They are way too harsh for a 550, I can't imagine them on a 400. My friend put them on a 750 and they were harsh. I think they should be used on nothing lighter than a 1000. Like Texas said, they are way over sprung AND over damped.

I would seriously consider Ikon, the old Koni shocks built by new owners. Restocycles carries them. There is a link at the top of the page.

Not going to order just yet as don't think I will be out riding it for a while.

Now that some of the lock-down restrictions has been relaxed here in the UK, I have paid the road tax and insurance, so she is now road legal.

I've just been on a 15 mile shake down test ride and I'm very pleased with how it rides. Took it down a two mile dirt track ending in a steep climb and the engine pulled like a train! :)

Been for another ride on the "Srambled Zed", I love this bike! I put the old mirrors on it to make road riding a bit safer but not keen on how they look, would bar end ones look better?
