Sean,
I'm not sure exactly what carbs you have but I've got several different smoothbores, 33s and 36s (only, I guess...at the moment) and they all 'rattled' at idle. The only ones that I've ever sampled that didn't rattle were 29mm Mikuni round-slide smoothbores...maybe the best carb ever. Anyway, "they say" that the rattle is the slides clattering up and down waiting for a big ol' gulp of air. I don't know, but I still experience what you are talking about with mine.

The bike handles a bit quicker and I really like it. It never handled poorly (as you well know); but in comparison to late-model bikes it was heavy and cumbersome, and it doesn't handle as quick as my 636 did, but it's way better now. The braided lines are a hot move, also. I'm going to go with some single-rate springs and thicker fluid in an attempt to stiffen the forks...trying to get as much of the dive out of it as I can...I'll let you know.

Anyway, keep posting, I love your silver theme. I'm probably going to get my bike back to red with black and white stripes...we'll see...

Thanks for the carb notes BK.

The carbs on the unit are Mikuni RS 36mm if I remember correctly. I have a set of Mikuni 34mm round bores that came with the bike. When cleaning the garage they appeared from the back of a shelf.... I'll probably be sending them into WG in the winter. These would probably be a better choice with the motor in a stock state of tune. At this point you can't just ham fist the throttle with the RS, if you do it falls flat on it's face. Smooth even throttle application rewards with kick ass acceleration.

Finally received a registration tag from DMV. I had to mail it in since it was non op for 4 year'ish...

I was about to chew the mail mans arm the last few days of the wait.

Road it into the office twice this weekend. It ran very well. Had to adjust the clutch as it was slipping (again). The adjustment worked so far, nice and solid hookup. Second ride I place my stock (red) bikini faring on it. The wind going over the Altamont pass can push your around a bit at speed.

Now that I see some black shmoots on the left brake rotor tells me i have a leaking fork seal on the left side and years of sitting let the oil saturate the outside brake pad. Time to make another seal order and new front pads.

Edit:
Scored brand new EBC Kevlar pads from a friend of mine. He had purchased three replacement kits for a Gpz550 and it's no longer around. But my bike is. Again, Score!

I had already ordered a new set of sintered EBC from the local cycle shop and canceled the order.

Saves me 75 bones and get's the grab back on the front end.

Now I just have to clean the fork oil off this caliper. Hate just blasting it with break clean thus screwing up the rubber bits.

What else is ok to use around the paint and rubber bits?

Good question. When I do the brake pads I alway do a system purge and re-do the brakes totally, so the calipers are off the bike and I do a total overhaul. They're so straight forward that it's not that big of a deal and the confidence that it gives me is worth the little bit of extra work; then you can be aggressive with the brake clean and have no worries.

Basically did just that. Purge and removed them last night.
The sintered pads removed were close anyhow. Surprising as I didn't ride it that much. But without an odometer it's hard to tell...:)

Looking seriously at the Acewell 3950 with a ACE-S10 to replace the speedometer cable.

Been waiting for a part like this to go with an all digital display. Products of this nature 8 years ago were beyond my means, and logic. This is attainable.

Have to sell it to the wife again as a safety issue. :)

Plus, CHP is out like mad lately and I don't want to get caught with my pants down. The friggen hand held laser they are using is diabolical. They can be quite a way from you and be absolutely sure they are targeting one vehicle in a group.

So on the list at this point:
1) Ride.
2) Work with Derek to do some laden and un laden measurements of the suspension.
3) Order me some new shocks and adjust the front as needed.
4) Purchase the instrument package that makes sense for the bike. Fit.
5) Fix the paint and add the blue and white stripes.
6) Attach some ZRX passenger pegs so I can support the pipe from a stout platform.

#6 may move higher on the list depending on what happens with the current pipe hanger. At the moment the pipe seems stable. No baffle rattle and slipping at the collector connection. I had just changed some items that seemed to help just before breaking the case. Nice to see the R&D progress improved things. But it's far from perfect.

Wooooooooooow! A couple cool similarities between our bikes (the 750s). I'm in the process of putting some ZRX passenger pegs on mine also:ohmy: ...just waiting for them to arrive. I'm modifying the exhaust...it's "jacked"...
And I'm looking at an Acewell also; I contacted them about the 4000 and they said it won't be out for a couple months and quoted it anywhere from $180 to $250...not terrible, but I'm hoping for $180 ;)

Lastly: the laser systems are accurate to 2.5" at 400 yards with a traditional power-source...and even further (nearly 800 yards) with a dedicated power-source. ...sorry.

PS> What color-scheme are you going with? Mine is a slightly-off shade of ELR and I'm going to go back to a red with stripes (I think black and white with a gold pen-stripe between the two...stripes on the fairing, tank and tail, not the side-plates).

Well the intent on the paint scheme is a flip of the red to silver basically. There was a picture I found a while back of a 1100 with this scheme that only sold in Japan, if I remember correctly.

So silver base with the blue and white stripes on the tank and tail.

Had a run in with CHP on an industrial road Saturday morning. Using an industrial road to seat the new break pads. He heard me saw through the gears a couple times. Came around the corner ad received the finger wave to the side of the road. Being that I'm doing this in reverse order I had not gone down and picked up my permit to get the test over with for the M class.

The bike was impounded.

I'll get it back on Monday as one of my managers (with M class) has to be present for the release and ride it off the impound lot... CHP officer misled me thinking I could get this all done Saturday but turned out not to be the case.

Caused myself a PITA being impatient. Won't do that again.

My full intent was to get the mechanicals ready for the driving test. Hope the judge will see it that way. Permit will be completed on Monday as well.

I'll have to look at the 4000. Thanks BK.

Oh man, that sucks! Truly sorry to hear about the luck! Cops are people and we all know that people can be pricks.

Get your permit before you go see the judge; I'm sure that's you plan already, but that might help.

The 4000 has an analog tach needle that's pretty cool.

I hope to get the driving test over with before seeing the judge, been reading the MC supplement and C class pdf to refresh my knowledge for the tests.. Officer was not a prick and doing his job, with Cali being a litigious state he was not interested in extending his liability diving the 1/4 mile home.

I'm the dumb ass in this situation and can only blame myself. Lesson will cost me. How much in total will be unknown until it's over.

I just looked back there and didn't notice the 4000. Nice looking unit. Will have to wait a bit to save up after these fines and storage fees are paid for.

Well, on a side note: glad it was a 'lesson' and not an 'experience'. Yeah, I guess I'm not upset that the tach isn't available yet...money thing here, too. But it'd be nice to know exactly how many Franklins this thing is going to set me back.
Hope the court thing goes well for you!

Bike is back in the garage and my wallet is $400 lighter at this point. Picked up a MC permit and will schedule the test once I have a paycheck in the bank. First time I've received 100% on the MC test.

Should have done this last week. Project is going to be on hold until account recovers from my stupidity.

I see both of you are planning to use ZRX rear peg set-ups. Is this a direct bolt-up, or what kind of mod is necessary to use them?
By the way, nice to see you back to getting the bike on the road again. I enjoy reading about others GPZ-750 projects, and what mods you are doing for ideas on my own.
current bike:
1982 GPZ-750
past bikes:
1978 Z1-R
1982 KZ-550, 615 kit, cams, head-work
1978 GS-1000 drag bike (younger days fun)
