Wow, what a great find.

Doesn't get any better than that!  Doubt the motor needs to be opened up past the valve & points covers.

Plugs, oil filter & fresh oil.  If the air filter is paper, it's likely crumbly.

Brakes first.  Be very sure it'll stop before you make it go.  Front brake will need special attention if the old brake fluid has caked.

It's only original once.  A few months of careful detailing might be all it needs cosmetically.  Be gentle & conservative.  Take your time.

Much of the OEM hardware, fasteners & such, are either NLA or, have been superseded with items that work, but aren't the same as period items.  Take pains to rescue fasteners.  Certain fasteners threaded into aluminum tend to seize with heat/cool cycles and exposure to atmosphere.  Suggest you apply the penetrating lubricant of your choice now, weeks or months before beginning any disassembly to help prevent broken/damaged fasteners.  If there's the least hint of rust or corrosion, apply penetrant.  The long bolts that secure the sprocket cover, and the screws that attach the intake boots are of particular concern.

An impact driver with JIS bits will be invaluable for cross head screws.

Please document the process in the 'Projects' sub-forum.  Lots of pics for yourself to assist with reassembly.

EDIT: almost forgot; slmjim paid $10.00 more for his '74 Z1-A in March, 1974 than the original purchaser paid for that KZ900.  I feel gypped...

Hi there. I'm from the Portland Metro and also have a low mileage 1976 KZ900A4 in green! My dad bought it back in '78. I'm in the process of getting it road worthy as well, and can't wait to ride it. Sounds like there's some others on here from the WA/OR area, too. I'd love to see a pack of these things riding around!

I've been doing a lot of cleaning and ordering of parts. New master cylinder, brake lines, throttle cables, pulled carbs, carb kit, new battery, etc. I had to replace the exhaust which was a bummer and expensive!

Ah sorry about bad news on the exhaust.. throw the old one up on the evilbay and you will still get a fair few quid for it. On a quick look the bike looks like it just needs a soapy bath, oil, filter and a tank of gas..but the reality is time eats away at everything on it. At least she looked like it was stored in a dry place, im dealing with a 78 z1000 that was in Irish weather for 7 years. It will all be worth it in the end...keep that playing in yer head. P.s the carbs look a 100 times better.
