Actually the plastic guard did it's job very well. That is it kept chain lube mostly confined to easy to clean areas. I thought about replacing for chrome years ago, but look at the chrome ones. They don't do nearly as well at keeping oil off the bike. For that reason I kept the stock guard. In all the years I've been riding chain drive motorcycles, the plastic guard used on the KZ650 is the best in function. Of course function is not all there is to riding, but just saying the guard is good for doing it's job, better than a chrome replacement.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

For a while there I looked into getting a standard model chain guard. but every single black plastic guard I found had damage, most of them were in pretty bad shape. even the ones that looked decent still had some sort of bad crack, scrape or gouge & were warped more often than not by a mile.

My reason for wanting to change over to chrome was because the last 2 pair of shocks I have used on my bike ( S&W Street strokers and now Progressives ) have a thicker bottom and force the plastic guard to twist, not a cool look.

I have been checking e-bay regularly to try and find a chrome guard for my 77 KZ650B , but only the ones I pictured before are there.
Patiently waiting for the correct one to show up,,, even if it needs re-chrome.
