Re: More on Kreme removal (UPDATE)
07 Jul 2012 09:01screw oxalic acid it dont work either, I went for that one too :pinch:300kph wrote: Got the rest of the Kreem out with MEK... then used a product called Magic Acid to remove the rust.
It turned a glorious silver metal color. Put more MEK in it to clean and dry out the chemical... then put some gas in it to try and seal it...
6 hours later the entire inside is rusted again.
Have one more product to try (a salt based acidic cleaner called LC-6799 by Lynx) Have a gallon of it and will try it out.
Unable to find Oxalic acid anywhere in this ditch-water town and the Lynx came from a concret company that swears it is a real rust eater and inhibitor. We'll see.
If that doesn't do the trick then I guess I'll have to break down and line the damn thing.
This tank obviously has all galvanizing gone and has somply become a rust factory.
Frustrated to no end.

Broke down and used a liner, but it is perfect and a really cool silver color... looks just like shiny metal. Had the best liner guy in the city do it. You would swear it is super clean steel. and he puts a lifetime warrenty on it.
Whew!
Now the final assy.

Did your liner guy by any chance divulge the name of the product he used to line your tank? Can't beat a lifetime warranty

Its a POR 15 product but he does add some of his own secret ingredients. He says you could put an alcohol fuel in it and it will not break down. Its got a 100 hour curing time though but with the length of this project it's a but a tick of the clock. (he also used some of his own acid products to completley rid it of rust and stop it from flashing long enuff to use the liner.
I swore I would not use a liner but this is the best I could hope for and it exceeded my expectations.
Gas tank issues have been a thorn in my side on 3 biles I have and there is no substitute for patience, proper preparation and the little things like rebuilding the petcocks and hunting down the gaskets.
My GS1100 is a very nice re-paint but started leaking and turns out it was not a falied seam but the fact they never changed the old gasket that sealed the fuel gauge filler hole. The sensor also had a leak and some "Seal All" is a wonderful product that forms a crystal clear seal that will last till the sun goes supernova.
My XS1100; same thing... The owner left a gallon of fuel in it for 9 years and it was a mess. Gasket on the fuel float hole got eroded and leaked a bit out there. That tank cleaned up perfectly and no liner is required. The petcock "tower" filters were $30 each and rebuild kits for the petcocks were $60. each. Pricey but small price to pay to get that important bridge between tank and carbs pristine.
I know we don't talk too much about other makes here but the Yammi is a 1978 XS11E that has just 3,364 original on it and was pretty much flawless 'cept for the tank issue. Doing the brakes, front seals, tires, new battery etc and what I will have is a bike that looks like it was just pulled from the crate. Came with a box of oil and air filters, full unused tool kit, pristine owners manual and factory shop manual. Using a remote fuel bottle got it running just this week after a carb overhaul and it purrs like day one.
Do I dare post a pic?
Here it is off the truck when I got it a few weeks ago (found it in Dearborn MI, original owner)
Be done next week or so. And yes, the rear backrest is now on the scrap heap.
