Decals for KZ 1000ST? was created by fxdl2051
Guys what do you think? I'd like to paint the bodwork blue or indigo but want to retain the gold pinstripping found on the OEM decals. Problem is the decals are a solid panel of contrasting color with the gold pinstripping on the outter edges of the decal. So I'm thinking just cut out the pinstripping and lose the center color panel. Do you think it'll work or will the whole thing be so flimsy without that center panel that I'll never get it to apply right. These decals cost $200 a set, so it's an awful expensive failed experiment if it doesn't work. I'm thinking to have it hand pinstripped would cost way more, any feedback?
Thanks all,
Ken

I'd go for pin stripping.
Where did you find the decals?
I haven't been looking for any,but mine needs to be repainted.
It will be painted black again and if they are not discontinued ....

another thing you could do is basecoat the bike, mask off panels with painters tape, paint the panel color, have a sign shop cut you some pinstripes of high performance gold vinyl, lay them on by hand over the seams (its easy, i could give you some tips) and then clearcoat the tank. this would give you a very close to stock look for not a lot of money

Thanks, that sounds like it would work, I could just get the vinyl gold pin stripping made for applicaton over a solid base color. What should I be asking paint shops?.I'm guessing this is different from that rolled vinyl pin stripping I can buy at an auto shop, never had much luck with that stuff when I've done it myself.
Thanks,
Ken

nah go to a sign shop and ask them to cut you some high performance gold, the high performance has a longer life and is easier to bend, it shouldnt be very much $$$, you really only need a couple inches of stripes cut vertically on a 24" roll, less than a dollar in material, if they want much more than $10 id go elsewhwere

I would urge you to keep the grey panel with the pin stripes... It will go nicely with your choice of new paint and it will retain one of it's key "Signature features.

I may add pinstripes to the second set of body work and tank I have for my ST but I am awfully fond of the clean mono-color of mine.

I have always coveted your ST, it's a stunner. The way you've painted yours was exactly what I had in mind, only in blue, maybe the blue I've seen used the chain drive version. So how much did that pin stripping set you back if I may ask? I'm trying to get a budget together. BTW, what kinda shocks are those and where can I find them, they've got to be better than the twin pogo sticks I got on teh back of my bike now.
Thanks,
Ken

So I'm guessing they are the same length as stock shocks with the same size eyelets for a straight conversion? I'll wager you get quite a few cash offers for that bike.
Thanks again,
Ken
