glad you got it out of there! 
i wonder if a guy couldnt use a hole saw with an inside diameter that was really close with the outside diameter as the existing nipple .
then use the existing nipple as a guide to cut it out,then have a new one made like your machinist made to replace it.you could probably even have it tig welded on there without causing too many issues ,then just touch the paint up

The problem with hole saws WIREMAN is that you need to have a solid area to start the pilot drill or it will wobble all over the place. Paint touch up was not an option as the decals, paint or clear coat would have to be blended in. It was just nice to see the bung gone as that was really scary work!

thats why i was talking about getting one with same inside diameter as the outside of your existing nipple,then the saw would use the pipe nipple as an arbor to follow 
if you did it right the only paint touch up would be directly around the nipple,i wouldnt think it would affect the sides of tank

Yea, you're right about the sizes but as I got good results, I'm thrilled it's over and looks good.
