I have been building motors for years, and have on ocassion used wood for sprockets. DON'T use pine or spruce no matter what you are told, don't ask me how I know...
Hardwoods are fine but not permanently, I usually replace them in a few weeks. The wood absorbs the motor oil and lubricates the chains.

From an engineering point of view, I think it's better for your wood to expand, rather than shrink.

Laminated wood is much more stable.:silly:

I have found that the adhesives in plywood tend to deposit themselves in the oil filter causing lubrication problems.

i'm always worried about saving weight on reciprocating parts so i tried to use douglas fir wrist pins but i found the valve train couldn't keep with the extra rpm i gained so i had to go back to using oak or maple

I have an extensive background in wood and cabinet making. Laminating two or three pieces together and bending it will make a very strong piece of wood. You will vhave to kmake a mould then glue each piece of wood together and use many clamps and most likely steam. Bendable plywood is also available. With the bendable plywood it must be glued to another piece of bendable plywood. Once glued it will be very sturdy. If you plan on doing this pm me and i could be of help...Russ

That scooter is awesome that is some fine craftsmanship. The wooden seat idea is cool you could do just a little thin pad that would be stuck to the top of the seat. Make it a little smaller than the seat so allow the wood to be exposed around the edges. You should be able to coat the seat in something that would protect it forever.
