yes i did mean www.zedder.com , while it's parts interchange software program, by finding a part number paint code for a part and going under it's help section on the top line, there is a paint code section that with the part numbers, paint code,it tells you what the color was or is called.

the software is well worth what they charge , just be prepaired for a short wait as after you pay for it by down load it takes about a day for them to send the down load link and unlock code.

I don't know what info ZEDDER gives you, but a color code like 2K and a color name like Ruby red will not get get you anywhere at the paint store. You need a paint code number that PPG, Dupont, ect can reference to get a mixing formula.

Ace,

If your 78 is a kz1000 the stripes are decals from the factory and tough to color match with car paint. Since they are metallic gold you would need to spray the color on to have the repair come out half decent. The red is a Candy color over a non metallic pale red base with a silver mid coat flake.

Try www.reproductiondecals.com . That's where I got mine from. They're really quite exacting in detail.

1981 Kawasaki KZ1000 J, bought in 1991
2004 ZZR1200, bought in 2005

Have also owned a 1981 KZ550 (first bike), 1984 Ninja 900, 1978 RD400, and a 1982 BMW R65

i did the same, got new decals from reproduction decals, then repainted the bike.
turned out my halibut red is really a silver gray base, with candy apple red, decaled then cleared. it's not perfect but is so close even the dealer who sold us the bike in 1974 couldn't tell.
