TOPIC:

Never had anything blasted and coated. What does a powdercoat on a frame run these days? There would be a couple of smaller pieces (swingarm, footpeg brackets etc.) I'm pulling the engine tomorrow and I can either rattlecan it myself or have it sandblasted and powdercoated. The latter would obviously be the more durable solution, but I am on SOME kind of budget...
Also, I understand when you sandblast and powdercoat you have to mask all holes and threads etc. Is this something you would do yourself or is it normally included in the blast/coat price, and what is the best way to mask these if I have to do the prep myself?

I just had mine done. It was about $100.00 CDN. That was for the frame, swing arm, triple tree, engine brackets, stands, and foot peg brackets. They did all the prep and filled the holes,wrapped the exposed threads. They used aluminum foil for masking. Just be very clear what to mask off it is very difficult to remove.

i think i prefer a black frame, but that "old nickel" would be nice on the right parts/application.

sounds like you got a good deal to me..

I asked around a bit at the local vintage bike store and they said at the place they use probably about $400 for the frame, swingarm, footpegs, trees and some misc parts. A lot more than I can spend I guess. Is that a crazy price?

If you think about the amount of work and the quality of the job you're going to expect I say $400.00 is a bargain.

You generally get what you pay for.

if you can strip all the parts do all the prep work and primer yourself you should be able to do a pretty decent paint job for less than thatB) goodluck happy wrenching!

if you do decide to shoot it yourself try to find a ceramic based paint its mainly for heat but it is a bit more durable then enamel

KZCSI - Thanks for moving the topic that's where it should have gone I was all caught up in the "frame" mode haha.
I'm pretty much going to have to paint it myself but I'm getting pretty handy with the rattlecans so that's ok. I've been having nice results with the Rust Tough satin black so that's what I'll probably use...

I know a powder coater peorsonally and he told me its not the amount of parts, its the amount of times you have to turn that oven on. He says powder is not expensive. He also says sandblasting is the most expensive and time consuming.
Basically the bigger the oven in the shop the lower the prices. His price is $100 BTW with prts that have allready been sandblasted. He charges $75 to do parts that have been subject to oil do to the pores opening when the item is heated, so he has to bake them twice.

I recently called around the Dayton, OH area and found a shop that will blast the frame, swing arm, and tree for $50 and a another shop that would do the powdercoat job for $175. Another shope would do both for $250.

There is a thread in the archives that discusses powdercoating and is now making me wonder if it is the best way to go as it can chip off.
