My front brake system was flushed with denatured alcohol - I actually let it soak overnite. It wasn't in very bad shape, but there had been some crystal buildup visible in the m/c reservoir. Then the front caliper was refurbished/rebuilt & new ss braided lines installed; the master cylinder wasn't redone - a new piston rebuild kit had been installed a number of years ago, but it had never been put to use. The brake work was done 2-3 years ago. The front brake has been functioning perfectly & there have been no leaks, particularly in regards to the m/c piston - it has the only rubber parts that were exposed to the denatured alcohol. JMK.

I think flushing the whole system with alcohol is probably a pretty common practice, but I would probably avoid it personally just for my own piece of mind. I would be worried that some of the alcohol would be stuck in the closed system. I guess if you flushed with alcohol and then flushed with a good amount of brake fluid, it would probably be OK. I just know that alcohol is recommened because it won't hurt all of those rubber parts. Brake parts cleaner is for discs, pads, and metal lines only. No rubber at all!

With the alcohol debate aside, I really learned a lot about Dot4 vs Dot5 because of this thread. I just hope that Mike W. (originator of this thread)gets enough information to help with his orginal question!!
