usually in the USA the model year starts in sept, and if your bike was delivered to a dealer in sept it probably got titled as an 82 and in kawasaki models you will find equiptment carryovers are quite common especially colors

I have more than one KZ that was manufactured during the 8th month and is the following model year, and I think I had one that was manufactured during the 7th month and was the following model year.

The advice on this thread is all good...I bought a new 1979 KZ1000B3 (LTD) many years ago and it had the paint pattern from the 1978 model (yet was a very early run 1979 LTD based on frame numbers). This suggests that parts of the bike were production over-runs from the previous year.

I think it's just awful that your bike is the wrong color for the year... I can help remedy that, just take all that wrong color stuff off and send it to me.... I will send you the correct 82 black color parts that you should have.

I love the ruby red! I was just wondering if it was a J1 or J2 and if the title was correct. I suspected it was a J2 with carry over parts but just wanted opinions and to see if anyone has encountered this before. If the dealer indeed did swap out the body parts with an 81', the guy who bought the silver 81' may want his stuff back! I may have to repaint Pepto pink with yellow and lime stripes.

And be the first person ever to be banned from KZR for repainting a bike :woohoo:
