just bought some used Zrx1200 kyb rear shocks. trying to put on my 79 kz1000st. however the bottom eye hole-rubber thingy needs swapping out. the zrx ones r smaller bolt hole. whats the best way to get them out so i dont screw them up?

First thing I'd try is pudhing out the steel bushing and then making the center hole in the ZRX shocks big enough to get the bushing in. If you have to remove the rubber bushing, try softening them by soaking in boiling water to heat them first.

Silicone spray will help them go back in easier.

i use a small deepwell socket and a hammer to tap them out. if they're stubborn i'll put the eyelet over a larger deepwell socket so it is just on the metal ring and drive it through with the small deepwell.

I had good luck using two sockets (one the size of the shock mounting hole and one the size of the bushing) and a vise. They came out and pressed in nicely.

Good Luck!

Steel...i just ran hot water on the kyb shocks which softened them up pretty good, then used Eddies deep socket trick...they came right out in one piece just like I wanted. However, no luck with the old shocks....they are stubbern as MoFo!!!! Both were great ideas by the way. U think I should switch old to a bigger hammer? I wanted to keep the old shocks for future use.

Just like people, when rubber gets old it gets stiff and set in it's ways :)

You might try heating it a little longer (just the eye, not the body), and then try the hammer and socket. If you don't have a vise then taking it to someone that has a press might work.
