07 Nov 2021 14:35Metallurgy has made some large advances since you were in your 20's Steve, a 530/520 is nothing like they were in the 70's/early80's.... I had a 630 double chain and sprockets {remember them ?} on a hot Honda/4 {850 venolia pistons} and still managed to stretch it, I'd run a modern 520 on that bike without any problems now, if I still had it...

Sounds like 530 chain is the way to go, and btw a quality o-ring 530 chain. Much obliged.
Unrelated to the chain, I now have a nice indoor storage space for the bike over winter. I can pick away at it, and then get 'er on the road again come March. Yes, March 2022. We have nice weather here in Victoria, BC, Canada. Spent 40 years working in Calgary, Canada, which DOES NOT have nice weather. Retired here now. Aaahhhhh.

I tend to be a conservative person and follow the KISS principle. When I went through my rebuild I had given thought of changing chain size from the 630 original chain, but for me the simplest way to go was with new 630 chain and sprockets. No muss, no fuss and it was original. One adjustment in 2800 miles so I guess it's working out for me. The bike isn't ridden hard and never sees high rpm shifts. In fact I don't think I have taken it north of 6K rpm which is fine with me. After all, the bike is 44 years old and deserves to be taken care in it's old age just like me. I read all the pros and cons of switching chain size, but being a true believer in originality I stayed with 630 items. I had the bike out yesterday for probably its last ride of the year and I am still impressed with how well it runs and sounds. I hope it runs the same after its winter sleep. Have I mentioned I hate winter??? If not....I hate winter!!
