Just joined the forum. Found a nice KZ1100A shaft last year. Just like the one I had new in 1983 and sold after two years.
I know there are threads on this topic of substitute shocks, but they're old and maybe not specific to this model.
It seems there isn't an Ohlins option anymore, but am looking for a high quality shock to make the bike feel more modern. Rear suspension feels a little dead.
Has anyone fitted an aftermarket shock or ZRX shocks to this bike?
Thanks

Welcome aboard. I would check with Ikon (Koni), or Hagon. Keep in mind that if yours are air adjustable, you will be giving that up.
The KYB shocks from the ZRX are fully adjustable, but even adjusted to their shortest length, are a bit longer than your factory shocks. Also, they are 15 or 20 years old now, and will likely need rebuilding. It is an option, but you need to be aware that it may entail a significant expense and may require some some other modifications to keep your suspension geometry where it needs to be.

I thought I posted a picture originally. That’s very helpful, and hadn’t stumbled on this source. The rebound adjustable looks nice.
I’m not sure Im giving much up with the air shocks. I’ve found videos on changing the oil on these, and they’re using instructions from Goldwing shock, and they’re saying they're the same. The shocks don't seem to react fast enough. This may be before cartridge style internal came into use.
Thanks for the tip.

Oh, and it’s an ‘81 as picture may reveal. …..
I guess I’ve gotten used to seeing the European nomenclature as a “Z1100” produced in some countries until 1986. Still leaves some doubt. They are one and the same aren’t they?

Since junking the air-ride system several years ago, I have been riding on Progressive 12.5" shocks and fork springs. By comparison, my 1100A handles beautifully and the ride is way sportier IMO.
Note the absence of an air balance contraption on the front forks. It was a pretty simple adaptation once the forks were removed.

KZ in North America, Z in Europe. There will be minor local differences concerning lighting, rear fender length and such, but essentially the same.I guess I’ve gotten used to seeing the European nomenclature as a “Z1100” produced in some countries until 1986. Still leaves some doubt. They are one and the same aren’t they?

Well, this is what I wound up with-made-to-order Ikon 7614 alum body shocks from Ikon USA in PA and YSS 265 Emulators from Brooks Suspension in England. Waiting for the seat from Sargent where they’re going to try to replicate a ZRX seat shape.

I checked and Ohlins USA says they don't have them available anymore. I could get them off eBay from Italy for one or two hundred more. They look cool but then so does keeping original non reservoir. Tail section is cool. Why not post a pic of the whole bike? And, where’d you get the grab rail?
I’ll post pics, buy I’m looking at snow and motivation is spread thin. I also want to lube steering head, swingwarm and drive splines, check valves and put a jet kit in, so I’m still collecting parts and don’t want to work on several times.
