Did you insure that the caliper shafts are perfectly clean and smooth, and that the caliper slides smoothly on the bracket and that there was a little genuine caliper grease on the sliding surfaces?

didn't use grease, but I used brake fluid on all the moving parts.

was gonna take the caliper apart and clean around the seal.

would high temp water proof grease be a good substitute?

No it's not use caliper grease. Piston seals are square, I've had rebuild kits that came with orings do not use those.

would something like this work? would prefer to not have to wait for grease online. I know ive seen red grease in some brake kits before.

also curious, what makeup makes it different

bike calls for DOT 3 but on DOT 4. is there absolutely no substitute for red rubber grease?

I'm fine with ordering red-rubber grease, but the description of the castrol red rubber grease says NOT to use it on metal to metal.

how do you lube just the O ring without some of it sliding in with the piston...?

I use ATE caliper grease on every rebuild. It´s a glycol basis grease like the brake fluid and Made in Germany.
You can get it for 5 Euro and it´s compatible with DOT3, 4, 5.1 glycol break fluids.

Do never use Mineral oil or grease on internal breake parts!!!

That is why you should use grease designed specifically for brake calipers. It will be formulated to be non-reactive with brake fluid and seals, and will work on the metal to metal spots.

Ordered some Castrol red rubber grease, should be here tomorrow. I'll try that german stuff if im not satisfied with the red rubber grease.

www.amazon.com/GENUINE-Corrosion-Oxidati...-34-04/dp/B01L63SXSU

www.redrubbergrease.com/tips-how-to-brak...ith-rebuild-kit.html

they seem to swear by this stuff like holy water

ill be back with results, chances are where the seal sits isn't clean enough.

Would a brass brush cut up the inside of the bore? or should i just use like a nylon brush?

You have to clean the groove where the square shape rubber seal sits. There is a lot of gung build up over the years that put some more Tension on the seal and Piston.
Your caliper Piston will not move freely and will stuck in movement that cause the drag!!!
