Redwing shocks were rubbish back in the day and that set, being NOS, these would probably be even worse, old seals, old oil and so on, I wouldn't even say they were "better than stock", and thats saying something.... Kray, someones being telling you porkies mate, the 900/1100f FVQ shocks were affectionately called "Fade Very Quickly", When I bought my 900F in the mid 1980's, the very first thing I did was throw those awful shocks and fit a set of Koni's, it transformed the bikes handling....

The FVQ's were still a big improvement on the stock '79 CBX shocks!!!! Pogo sticks is what I called those.

Come to think of it, I don't know what wouldn't be an improvement on those.....but having said that, guess what I'm putting BACK on my now restored '79 CBX! :silly:    Big circle O' time....

I can understand them for a restoration, painful as it may be... :P The FVQ's were an improvement, just don't get them hot, {which wasn't that hard !!}... ;) Maybe its our {Aussie} warm, all year round weather thats the problem B)

With the original "simple" FVQ on the '79 CBX (the "pogo-sticks"), I got frightening weaves and wiggles when changing lanes, and mind and body altering rear wheel hop when braking heavy with the rear brake (and front - just in case anyone is too eager and quick with the "learn how to ride" comments). Both issues went away when I put on the '82 CB900F FVQ's I found at Sam's Cycle Salvage - they only had 6,000 or 8,000 or so km on them. I used them off an on over the next 8 years, and for the $90, I was quite happy with them until I could afford better.

I'm probably never going to ride my first '79 ever again... not when it is nicely restored and NOS turn signals run $1700 for the set of four and NOS original seats are over $1000, so I'm not to concerned about the performance of the pogo-sticks now - in fact I'm very happy I didn't throw them away back then.

I had the cb900F2c {red and white one} with the remote reservoir shocks, i used to get weaves on higher speed sweeping corners, took them off and put on the Koni's and the weave stopped, they were probably better than the first generation FVQ's but they still went sloppy once hot... ;) Never owned a CBX, but I still think they are an iconic bike...

I can get a set of rebuilt KYB Zephyr 750 shocks for around $250 from a local guy. Thoughts?

Hey guys,
I'm jumping in here. This discussion is getting me really interested.
I have a question for you on the same topic.

I've been looking at ZRX1200 shocks to put on my 1978 KZ1000 LTD, but my big concern is: Would the 1" extra length be a problem? Could it be enough to make steering twitchy? It's not like it's really near twitchy to begin with...

What are your thoughts?

You can modify them by removing the preload tabs and/or installing limiters inside the shock. I read about removing the preload tabs on a ZRX forum but I took it a step further by welding the adjuster to the inner sleeve. I also had to shim out the left shock to clear the chain guard using flat washers.

Got mine back from CL Mototech and it's like a completely different bike. A nice set of shocks for under 200 bucks.
