74 Kz400 fuel range

20 Jan 2016 08:56 - 20 Jan 2016 08:58
#707378
Hey guys,

Whats the range I should be expecting with this bike? Seems like I ran out of gas around 70 miles. Had to have a friend come by and put a gallon in my tank then the bike ran just fine back to my house.

This seems a little low, but let me know as this is my first kz400.

Thanks!

(also unsure if this is the right forum for this question, sorry)

Should probably be in the carb section. Anyway. yeah that range won't hunt. When I was riding my 76 KZ400 regular I was getting close to 60 mpg. Either the tank wasn't full, you are leaking fuel or are waaaaay too rich.

The bike probably needs a tuneup & maintenance. probably long overdue.

The KZ400.com site has a manual. The forum there may not be safe for your computer --- as reported by
someone on another kaw site. and I think the forum is inactive. not sure.

Do you know about the reserve fuel? When the petcock is on RUN and the engine starts to sputter, move the lever on the petcock to RESERVE, and you should have about 3/4 gallon more. Unless you are seriously in the boonies, that should get you to a gas station.

Yep, i'm aware.

I'm fairly certain that my fuel filter is a poor quality (chinese ebay) and limiting the flow of fuel to my carbs. I'm gonna take it off and run it and see if i get some better results.

If you do that make sure your gas tank is clean or you will have problems with fine grit or rust in your carbs!!!!!!!!!

Yup, aware of that too. just part of narrowing down the issue.

Also i've used these type fuel filters in gravity fed applications before and it worked....ok...

any better options?

A clean filter is a good idea, but I can't imagine a clogged one would cause you to get such crappy mileage. More likely to be a stuck float, a missing or unscrewed jet, or a broken overflow tube.

not clogged, just the wrong type of filter for a gravity fed system
