Mixing brake pads
13 Aug 2013 14:41
Putting new front brake pads on my dual disc setup. I ordered a set of pads off eBay and unfortunately while installing one of the inboard pads it became damaged. Manufacturing defect - retaining screw hole was not tapped deep enough and when I tightened it split the pad. Seller opted to refund rather than replace.
So now I have one good set and I need another set. Is it safe to mix with a different brand or should I make sure I use the exact same brand and material type? Do the thicknesses vary from brand to brand? Guess I'm trying to save a buck here, but looking for some help with this situation. Thanks.

Those NOS part prices are ridiculous lol. Guess if you are working on a original restoration.
I bought 2 sets for under $30.

I believe the Z1-B would have originally had a single front disk brake. If that is true, and if you now have dual front disks, do you know what model the brake calipers came from? Ed

Really? I did some quick checking and it looks like the dual-disc was an option for the '75 Z1B. I assumed that's how mine came equipped. What's odd though is that after disassembling the calipers I found one caliper had a different piston and different pads installed.
I know the calipers are Tokico, but I'm not sure how I would go about identifying them beyond that. Is there a number or stamp somewhere?

Those don't look like Z1 calipers to me, I don't believe the Z1 calipers had fins on them. Hopefully, someone will recognize those and be able to identify them, otherwise getting the correct pads may be difficult. The Z1 calipers I have seen for sale look more like the ones in the pictures below. Ed

Well now you really got me thinkin Ed!
The pads I ordered fit and look the same as the pads that came out of these, but I've seen many pictures that show the calipers your posted a picture of and they are definitely different.
Now I want to know what these are!

You may have hit the brake caliper lottery! :woohoo: I did some surfing - Take a look at the 4th item for sale in the first link below, and notice the asking price. The caliper in the second link also looks similar to yours. So, maybe this can be a starting point for your research. Ed

Sun of a gun, those are them! I actually found the first link you posted was about to reply, but you beat me to it. The second link is a better picture and definitely confirms it.
This explains a lot to me. I've been having trouble fitting seals and dust boots for these calipers. I have a feeling they share the same pad part number, however the piston bore is different. Uh oh, looks like I will be returning some parts.

Can you post a picture of your front end. Would like to see the rotors.

Here's the diagram from Kawasaki.com for the 750-H2 brake caliper. What is really interesting is that when I looked to see what other bikes might use the same brake pads the Z1-B is listed (see second image). So maybe the pads you bought were correct. Ed

Yes, I have no doubt the pads are correct. The seals I ordered however, well that's a different story.
