Allballs steering bearings for 77 kz 1000 wrong?

So I was looking at the all ballz racing steering stem bearings for my kz. It lists the top and the bottom as the same but when disassembling mine the top and bottom were clearly different sizes. I want to upgrade them while I have them out but I want to make sure I get the right ones.

Any other sugesstions on a different manufacturer? I am doing a fork swap but I will match to stock bearing sizes.

I'm doing the same thing on a 78 not allot of people seemed to be chiming in I'm just gonna oeder a set and see what happens

I ordered the kit that All Balls recommended for my 78 KZ1000 A2 and it worked fine. I don't remember the specific sizes but I think the lower race was a larger diameter. I don't believe there should be any difference between 78 and 77.

Order it through Z1 Enterprises and if it doesn't work they will take it back. If you call to order they will make sure you get the right part.

BTW you will have fun removing that lower race. It's real tight in there.

I installed All Balls #AB22-1014 in my KZ650. The upper and lower on mine are different sizes and all the correct pieces were in the All Balls package. Ed

The All-Balls kit contains 30 x 52 x 17, 30 x 48 x 14 - so I'm not sure where you are getting info that they are the same top and bottom. We have sold hundreds and hundreds of that kit - it is correct for all the early 650/900 and 1000 models.

The kit worked perfect for my bike. The only surprise I had was once you seat the new tapered races, you be hard pressed (pun intended) to get the races back out as there is really nothing to knock a drift against due to their size aligning perfectly with the pocket. If I were to do it again, before I put them in, I would use a Dremel or a die grinder and make a couple small notches 180 degrees from each other on the top and bottom "shelves" in the steering stem tube. That way, if you have to remove them, it should give you enough to catch the end if your drift on and knock them back out. Just my .02

Good point. If I ever need to replace the new races I will probably have to use a Dremel to cut them out. Ed

if the new tapered bearings last longer than the original.changing them wont be needed in my lifetime
while I plan on riding in my 80's only reason I'm swapping bearings now is the front end change tne original are still in great shape

Agreed the new bearings last much longer. I only ran into the issue since my front end swap needed to be in place for the build and mockup, but was going to take them back out prior to baking for powdercoat. I have had some concerns around brinilling of the bearing races due to the 400 F temps.

makes good sense hadn't crossed my mind on the heat factor which im sure wouldnt be a problem but something else to think about indeed I'm putting my order together gonna give em a try. I'm painting my fraeme if this 2nd sergury doesnt keep me down very long
