Re: 84 GPZ Mono/KZ 1000 Hack job in Progress

I got a chance to work on it some today. Had to take a 1/16 off and it fit nice and snug in the frame.
The frame brace where the dogbone mounts is the close to the same on both bikes so I am going to trim the GPZ mount off and use it. Will have to open it up a bit to allow for the extra centerstand reinforcement on the KZ. Took alot of drawings and measurements.I was hoping to do this without removing the motor yet but don't think that will happen. Time to have another go at it.

I screwed up and erased a bunch of pics. The brake clears the arm with a bit of tweaking but I have to move the master because it is in the way of the top shock mount. Going to try and keep the pics on my project page.

I have been thinking about this pivot and axle thing. I have decided to purchase a bearing/bushing kit from another model GPZ to be able to use my KZ parts. Why Ma Kawasaki decided a 750 needed a heavier pivot bolt that an 1100 I do not know. But I think I will be able to come up with a kit that I can use the bearings and seals and such.
The axle. I have not got my hands on the parts yet but I contacted an ebayer who is selling an 84 GPZ 1100 arm. The adjusters are the same diameter as the 750 but the axle hole is 20mm! Now if I can find some without buying the whole farm.

I looked for a long time for GPz1100 adjusters, but finally gave up.
84-86 GPz900 swing arm has four needle bearings and two spacers, and that's enough parts to do two GPz750 swing arm conversions, although you still need to make a spacer. I used 3 or 4 propane torches to heat up the swing arm around the bearings, then gently tapped them out, no damage to anything.

Did this same conversion 27 years ago (1985).
Don't remember a thing about it, apart from the fact that it still handled like a pig afterwards!

31 Dec 2012 17:13Thanks for the heads up on which kit I need. Is the 1100 the only one that has the large axle as far as you know?steell wrote: I looked for a long time for GPz1100 adjusters, but finally gave up.

Pardon my ignorance
but what keeps the arm from moving back and fourth on the sleeves that pass thru the bearings? The sleeves extend past the ends of the arm a bit. I can fit the sleeves to the frame but do I need spacers that go over the sleeves also?

There should be some sort of dust cover on each end of pivot tube
