Now, does anyone have a shock wrench?

they should turn by hand if the weight is off (ie center stand or pick up the back end), the ones on my 650 would, it just had the side stand, so lift up with one hand, and turn with the other....:)

Tried that, no go, tapped them around one setting with a hammer and a screwdriver, so I know they will move, but I will need the shock wrench to turn these buggers.

I live for ebay, so I turned there first, and the cheapest one I could find was around 15 or 16 bucks, so I asked my local Kawasaki dealer and got them to order me one for less than $7.50 with tax.

Again, thanks to all of you for your support. You make a newbie feel like there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I WILL be back for more advice, I am sure, though the service manual I bought has already solved one problem for me. I hope to slowly get this thing running in peak condition, and that is going to mean new gaskets all the way through it this coming winter, as well as whatever else may come along.

Thanks, thanks, thanks! See you all again soon! :cheer:

just traveled this road heres what i found
got some Dyna glide (02) shocks from ebay
top mount holes too big needed a bushing
bottom mount too wide
springs way too stiff, two 220 pounders barely moved them
used original springs
H.D. shocks don't have as much travel,1/2 inch or so less
i used a lathe and a mill without them this would have been a ugly ballgame

I've got to ask- did you check to see if your bike still has the little tool kit crammed under the seat near the battery? Very often you can find a cheesy shock wrench in there.

No tool kit under the seat - as a matter of fact, I am already getting one together to go under there, as the straps are still there and in good condition, but no shock wrench there, cheesy or otherwise.

I got one from my local dealer, opened it, went outside the dealer to check it, and it doesn't fit. What the -?!?! Had them order me the slightly more expensive (twice the price, grrr!) adjustable wrench, should be here beginning of next week, so hopefully this issue is all settled. I have to say, though that I am not 100% sure that I have completely solved this kaka - could it really turn out to be as simple as a wrench? LOL

Will post again when I find out...

Go to Sears, buy a strap wrench, works just as well...
