Do tires ever go on sale? was created by apbling
So, maybe this is wishful thinking, but I need some new rubber on some of my bikes. I made it through this riding season, but will need some new ones for sure next year. I've been thinking (and watching) that maybe a site like jcwhitney or dennis kirk would run a special on tires during the winter, but I'm starting to think I may be wrong.

Any thoughts?

Rocky Mountain or Motosport blew out some MX tires earlier this year. Rear Dunlops for $29.99, usually a $75 tire. Just keep an eye out. Check Ebay too, sometimes someone gets a load of discontinued stuff and blows them out. I go through dirt tires like mad so I'm always looking for deals on them.

This doesn't really answer your question, but another place to get tires is JakeWilson.com... free shipping on orders over $99. I'm leaning towards the Bridgestone Battlax BT45 for the next time. zBT45z

Edit: BT45s from motorcyclesuperstore - $210 total/shipped. tire date code same as year installed (2012).

I was eyeing up the metzler m880s for my shadow. Got good reviews for grip and treadlife. Also kind of pricey. I'm guessing the cheaper tires might go on sale but the good ones not. I can see why though... what is one to do, make their own? :)

You're welcome, but don't thank me - thank my neighbor down the street (WABBMW).
He's the one who mentioned them to me. hee.

As a side note, one problem w buying tires online is that you can't check the date of mfg until you get them. I bought a set local at CycleGear. One of the new tires was several years old, so I returned it for a more recently manufactured tire.

The age of the tire is a something you'll hit constantly with 'no-name' places clearing out old stock. I would rather pay a few dollars more and be guaranteed of a fresh tire. When I looked at a couple of tires I bought in a batch of parts from a dealer, the tires were old - over 10 years old...

Where do you find the production date on a tire I never really looked
most people assume new means new.

I was at the Honda dealer getting a thermostat for my Goldwing they had a tire rack out front
with a ton of tires clearanced some had stickers that looked like they were printed
around wwii lol

There is a date code molded onto the sidewall somewhere if you look for it. Old tires can be a gamble depending on how they were stored. I used to buy tires in bulk (save money) but I stored them wrapped in plastic in my closet. Without any exposure to air or light, the rubber can not degrade. But given the choice, buy a new tire if you can because you don't know how they stored it.

I buy my tires locally because they throw in free mount and balance which would cost $25 otherwise. The prices are reasonably competitive so I save money on the total price buying here.

The tires I just purchased from JakeWilson.com were of recent manufacture. The front Bridgestone BT45 was made during the 24th week of 2012 and the rear was made in the 22th week of 2012.

Look for the DOT code on the sidewall - the last four digits in the DOT code denote the manufacturing date. First two digits of the last four denote the week, third and fourth digits denote the year. Example: 2609 means manufactured in week 26 of the year 2009.

If there are only three digits in the end of the code(first two digits = week, third digit = year) the tire was manufactured before the year 2000 in which case it should be replaced asap - personally I would replace any tire more than 6 years old but hey, it's your money and your a$$, your decision...
