Sissy Bar and Back Rest Help Needed
16 Jul 2011 22:04Need ideas from the Idea Guys! Bought a second rear grab bar for my 1982 KZ1000J2. Need ideas on how to mount a backrest for pretty wife. Would prefer some sort of clamp for the 3/4 inch tubing, but will consider cutting/welding the bar if I have to. Most of the round sissy bars I see are wider than the 6 inches of 'flat" I have at the back. Would like to get some sort of clamp with an extender so I can mpunt one of the 8 or 9 inch sissy bars that I see advertised. Another thought was getting two posts about 6 or 7 inches high with clamos on both ends and putting some sort of bar through them. I don't know and do need suggestions. Thank you.

Never tried anything like making my own (been lucky finding old ones in the past)but I don't think a clamp system would be a good idea. If you make one slide into the other and use a lock pin or bolt to hold them together then that might be OK. I'd just look at making one from a welded approach if it were me.

I made my own backrest last week. I used blackpipe .08 thick walls. I think it may have been a bit much but it turned out nice. I can post pictures if you would like. I am a cnc programmer mill and lathe so I am currently designing a solid alum. one that will have adjustments. I was going to use k100s alum. let me know if you want pictures.

Here are a few pics. It took me about 3 hours to make. I did not sand or prime it before spraying it with black paint. I used it right after I finished it. The wife demanded me to make one since I was unable to buy one online anywhere without waiting for one to turn up on ebay or craigslist.

When I was younger, I didn't want a sissy bar on my bike, I liked it when the women I took for rides held on. And held on tighter when I gunned it. Now, I am going to try to get a sissy bar as soon as I can possibly afford it!
You did a very nice job Gary. I seriously need to learn how to weld! One question though, is it really only secured at the top of the shock?

Thank you. It is bolted in the same four points as the grab bar. I used 5/16 18 tap to thread the holes above the blinkers. Its very stout.

Its harder and harder to find a backrest that will fit these bike anymore. I am thinking of taking my time and making some nice ones and selling them. Everyone I talk to seems to want one.

I think there would be a market Gary, especially ones that are (at least) semi-custom to a particular model bike.
