Safe to do gas welding on my frame?
13 Sep 2010 20:51
I'm welding in some frame bracing on my 1000. I can do pretty nice welds with my oxy acetylene but I know it makes the area around the welds hotter for a longer time than electric welding. Any problem with this? Just wondering if the heat might make the frame tubes more flexy or brittle, or something... kinda defeats the purpose of the bracing.
No I'm not going to go buy a tig or whatever....

Nelson, I think that gas welding would be fine if you know what you're doing. Actually, it is one of the preferred methods of joining chromoly tubing due to the slower cooldown. This frame is not chromoly by the way, it's mild steel. If I am not mistaken, Sanctuary actually brazes their frame braces in place.

thanks, just what I needed to hear. I've already made some hot spots in critical places and started to wonder if it was a mistake to do that. I bought mild steel for the braces because i was pretty sure the frame was the same.

Kosman's instructions say to TIG weld when adding frame braces.

That's one of the things mentioned in the translated version of the Sanctuary Frame that is floating around. They make mention of arc welding causing localized hardening which leads to cracks in the frame. Next thing you know we'll all be annealing our frames.

weve got an oven at work big enough to park a small bus in for heat treating parts, already thinking about stress relieving a junk frame to see how it works

Be careful what you ask for. I guess if it's a junk frame it won't matter. One thing about stress relieving steel, it relieves the stress how it wants to. Doesn't care too much what you want.
I had to make a gauge once out of 304 SS. The engineering braintrust decided that it needed to be flat within 0.001" for a 9" long gauge. If I tried to cut more than 0.007" deep at a time that damned thing turned into a Pringle's potato chip. So I must have flipped that thing over 10 times to mill it down to size. All this for a go, no go gauge used to check the thickness and length of a peice of low density foam by SIGHT! French engineers, placed on this earth to try common sense daily.
