Loose caliper mounting bolts should be obviously apparent.

The hidden issue may be excessive play ("slop" or "looseness") in the interface between caliper and caliper shaft where the caliper "floats" (all as above described).
And the noise is difficult to reproduce in the shop.

As I recall, the subject bike is a KZ1100GPZ.

Sorry for resurrecting an old post. Finally, i found the origin of the clacking noise in my bike ('81 GPz1100). It wasn't something loose in the brakes as i was sure, but so in the two center headers; the inner pipe (you know, double walled headers) were loose, soldering was broke. Hope this could be useful for other guys.
