removing old tapered stem bearings
23 May 2010 10:19
Hi,
my stem hold s old tapered bearing rollers.. they are completely shot. alot of play is on them and they have pitting all over. SO deciding to swap them for a new set i got a question.. i know how to remove the cups that sit in the stem. do any of you guys have any tips on how to remove the lower tapered bearing? its quite stuck to the lower stem fork..
any tips are much appreciated!

long piece of rod and big hammer will knock the old races out, check with local mechanic to see if he has something to remove bottem bearing.
to reinstall the races i use a piece of 1" all thread with a nut and fender washer on each end and 2 pvc couplings to make a press to install them

I'm not much good with the lingo
, if we're talking the bottom bearing on the lower tripple tree... well most kits come with a new dust seal.
If you don't mind detroying the old dust seal, I've always been able to remove them with a ball joint/tie-rod fork.. working one side then the other.
If you don't have one around you can carefully do the same thing with a flat screwdriver.. slowly and carefully working each side. Once you have it up about 1/4 inch it's easy enough to get under it and work it off.

Cut (90 degree hand grinder with cutting disk or Dremel) the sonsabitch off....
Personally, take it to a shop and have them do it for what $20.... While your at it, have them press the new one on...
Might save you a whole lot of head ache and frustration and the all mighty "OH SHIT" factor that is a common phrase here...
Now before all get their big girl princess panties in a bind, sure attempt it with the tools you have but some things without the proper tools are doomed for Uh-Oh....
We've all been there...

I used a dremel with a small cutting wheel, when I was getting close to the stem I used a cold chisel to crack the race through to the stem. After that it basically fell off.
Good luck!

The tapered roller races don't have any lip to catch so there is not way to hammer them out directly. As Jake said, use a dremel if you have it, but it takes forever to cut them the right way. Do not cut into the frame tube! You don't need to go 100% through, just 90 to 99%. Then crack it with a hammer and chisel to bust it out.
The easiest way is to mig weld a pipe or big washer to the race and hammer it out. If you don't have a hammer, then I think the dremel is the safest way. It'll take about 4 or 5 full cutting disks for the dremel on the frame tube. Then you'll need another 1 or 2 for the race on the stem.
If there is a proper tool, I'd like to know what it is, I'll gladly get it it because this is a huge pain in the ass. Rollers last a long time, but not forever. Like I said, there is nothing protruding to grab onto, so I don't see how any tool can do it, without welding.
