I just bought some new spray on chain lube called:

DuPont Teflon Multi-Use Lube

And it is supposedly identical to and sold under a different name of:

DuPont Teflon Chain Saver

Except when labeled the latter way, they charge more for it.

Anyway, here are the details:

www.webbikeworld.com/t2/motorcycle-chain...eflon-chain-lube.htm

This is very cool stuff because it goes on fluid and then dries to a waxy kind of residue that is not sticky at all.

I will be trying it next, but wonder: would it be better to use a light filming lube like this stuff and then put some kind of a heavy sealing lube over it (like PJ)?

I guess it just down't feel right if the chain isn't coated in something.....

I just use gear oil, so I have no opinions on chain lube. I just stick some oil on it after rain or after 500km or so, and it always works well for me. I have an x-ring chain too, which helps.

It's an interesting idea. If it lubricates, that could be the perfect lube. Don't use PJ1 ever though. It will ruin a chain faster than using no lube.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

I have been using the PJ blue label (the clear stuff) for a long time. I didn't know it had a problem.

What is wrong with it?

t-dub i wouldn't use gear oil it willswell the very expensive o-rings in you chain and cause them to wear not to mention the mess it must cause try using something like maxima chain wax it is designed for o-ring chain use and if you put it on when the chain is warm thenit soaks int the o-rings and bushins which is most important and it dries on the outside like wax and won't fling off. it will save you money in the long run and your chain will love you for it and your bike will be alot cleaner.

Oh really? I never thought it'd do that, since its just oil. I guess I'll buy a can of good lube when everything goes back together. I guess my x-ring chain will be nigh on useless anyways since it wont be long enough now. Too bad really, only has like 1000km on it.

I have been using Kal-Gard Chain-Kote for years and it gives me the best chain and sprocket life. I have used other stuff and could get at best 10-12000 mi on a chain and rear sprocket. I can get double that using this. I would never use anything els. It may be messy on the rear wheel because of the Molybdenum in it, but I don't care. One thing is, "Don't ever use the clear crap" unless you can afford to buy chains and sprockets often.

I gotta second Bountyhunter on his teflon chain lube. I'm not sure if it's Dupont or not, but Lowes has a teflon chain wax that I've been using on my new chain, and so far, I'm very impressed. I installed a brand new o-ring chain and sprockets a couple years ago, I've been using this stuff alone on it, and I haven't had to adjust the chain yet at all. Been through two back tires in the last couple years too, so I haven't exactly been babying my baby.
But when I do take my wheel off for a new tire, I run the chain through some kerosene, scrub it with a cheap paint brush and wipe it clean, let dry, relube with the teflon.

On the bikes I've had before, I've always used gear oil, or whatever else I had laying around, and I was forever fighting tight spots and buying new chains. Not to mention the permanently dirty back wheel.

I use the chain wax. Like timebomb said heat the chain up on a short ride then spray it on,B) it soaks in then dries and will not fling all over rear tire.

The reason I say what I do about PJ1 is just my own experience, and this was way back in 1982 so I suppose I should forget it, but my story is I always took a 5000+ mile trip each summer and I always get 50,000 miles out of a chain, but this one year my chain lube fell off onto Interstate 80 and I had to stop at a motorcycle shop to buy some so I got PJ1. So I lube with PJ1 just as usual, every 100-200 miles.I get 500 miles down the road and have to pull the wheel back nearly 1 complete mark on the swingarm. Next day same thing and so on. I don't know what the problem was, but I got home that chain was stretched to the limit of adjustment and only had like 10,000 miles on it. Some may not think 10,000 is out of line for a chain, but I've ridden a lot of miles and get 50,000 out of a chain every time other than the one and only time I used PJ1. So I know I dwell on a one time thing, but still would not use it. It may even be an entire different lube than 25 years ago for all I know, so whatever works for you is fine with me.
About the 80-90wt gear lube for a chain lube, my wifes 2003 Honda Rebel recommends this lube and not commercial chain lube so chances are it works, but that stuff is sticky to clean for sure.

A couple of years ago, Motorcycle Consumer News (a pretty fine mag with NO ads)did an extensive test of chain lubes. As I recall, the Dupont Teflon and PJ1 Black lable came out on top.
