Looking for rearsets = HEADACHES was created by Colossus
I've been on this site for over six months and this is my first post. I've gathered so much crucial info and help from the forum that it's unreal! I knew next to nothing about bikes when I picked up my first ride (a little over four months ago, an '81 kz550) and now I have a better than basic understanding (as well as a full-blown obsession) of my bike and a few others! After I replace the top end gaskets this week I'll be ready to roll again.

Here's my problem: Some friends had me under the impression that I'd be able to toss rearsets on my bike for $150 to $200. I was going to install them in the same spot my passenger pegs are. I'm a little confused as to what will work. Will most any of them work if mounted properly? Do I need more parts than just the bolt that attaches the peg to the frame? The perfect set I found doesn't come with the rods for connecting the shifter and the brake. The rear is a drum brake. Does that matter? Trying to figure out where to buy these things is driving me nuts! I'm fine with used or (cheaper) new. I've logged some serious hours on this forum and the rest of the web trying to answer my own questions but I'm still confused. I realize that patience is key but I wanted to work this out in the next week or two! Thanks for any help or suggestions and go easy on this total newbie!!!

I looked around and found a guy who used a set of Vortex adjustable rear sets but they are spendy. Around $500. Looks like you need to make a friend who can do fab work and get a set of late model sportbike sets and get them to work.

I am wondering if you can do what I did. I just simply moved my pegs back about 5 inches on my bike..I have rear sets now! If you want them to look like rear sets on the sports bikes...just get you some aluminum foot rest and swap them out....I believe that they will work well for you!

$100-200 seams on the low side. A good set of NEW Vortex rear sets run $350 and up alone. Other brands (CRG, Gilles, Woodcraft, LSL) are way up there in price.

One thing you may find difficult is finding NEW rear sets for an older bike... You could try matching to other makes for mounting but whoa, what a PITA that would be...

Now if you have fab tools (welder, grinder etc...) and skills, you can do like some of the rest of us where fab/weld your own mounts.

Example, I purchased my used Zx7 rear sets for $40 complete, buffed them out then fabbed some mounts,.. whola....

Thanks for getting back to me y'all. I don't have any tools beyond the basics and honestly wouldn't know where to start in fabricating my own. Here's the set I was interested in. $169 plus S&H. I like how simple they are especially since my bike's pretty stripped down and basic. My only concern would be finding the crucial missing parts that make 'em work!

I am doing a similar thing to OMR, have a set of rearsets I bought off a CBR600RR, planning to mount them this summer.

The seller of that auction has the exact model Tarozzi rearsets for your bike at his store for $100 more. You might just want to consider going that route if you aren't into fabricating the rods/levers, etc. He also sells those parts separately.

I've been considering buying these for my 900 as the raasks I have don't totally work w/ my brake set up.

Forgot to mention that if you drop him a line he will probably email you the assembly drawings for them, because there's no picture listed for that model on his website. He sent me the paperwork for the 900 & 1000 so I could double check them with my disk brake linkage.

Good luck!

This section on the Do The Ton site is for setting up rearsets and brakes.
There is a sticky at the top for Rod ends galore - all sorts of neat things that may have some info on getting the linkages etc.
