Shocks for my gs arm conversion
18 Mar 2009 00:38
Ok I ordered a set of goldwing shocks for my gs swingarm conversion. I'm having truoble with the top mount rubber. The rubbers that came in the GW shocks was too big for the mounting post meaning it was loose. So I took the rubbers out of my kz shocks and they are too "short" for the hole for the top mount. Anyone have an idea? I'm thinking it will be ok with the kz rubbers in it and maybe use a smaller washer that will fit in the hole and just squish it all in. Maybe I should have taken pics so this makes sense.

i would build some sleeves to go over the stud to take up the slack in the gold wing bushings.
i would not use a washer that was any smaller than the hole in the upper shock mount,as it could allow the shock to possibly come off over the washer.which could get ugly quick.

I bought new shocks off ebay for the GS 1100 when I did my swap. When the shocks are topped out, the swingarm is very close to hitting the frame, but never does. Using these shocks lowered the back end of my bike, maybe an inch or so. If you use any longer shocks, you will have to modify the part of the frame that the stock exhaust bolts to. I didn't want to cut my frame at all, so I ordered the GS shocks. Like I said, they are shorter than stock, so it lowered the bike, but allowed me to get away with no cutting whatsoever. The shocks are Chinese, and stiff as hell, but I can't afford $400 shocks. I think they were around $100 new.
Don, when I bought my GS shocks, they came with several bushings. I'm wondering if you could just buy a universal set like this that might have the right size bushings for you.

Well here are some pics of what I have.
The one on the left is the GW rubber bushing, the right is the kz bushing in the GW shock.
Here is how it sits on the bike.
What I did was use a small washer that fits in the hole against the rubber, then I put on a bigger one. The first washer sits against the lip of the mounting stud and holds it just like the kz shocks. Since I used a bigger washer it won't slip off the stud.

Yeah the inside of the mounting hole is tapered so there is no way it's coming off over the washers.
