truing a laced wheel

24 Jan 2009 20:28

Got my new tire on the rim, new bearings installed, dug a path through the snow to the shed today to install the wheel and found out I’m not done. That sucker hops up and down like a pogo stick. I thought the problem was with the old tire so I lived with it for a while, now I realize it’s in the rim.

Is truing my wheels something I can attempt or is a professional recommended? Any idea’s on cost if I have it done?

hopping as in bouncing/shaking,did you balance the tire after installing it ? being out of true would usually cause a wobble B)

Hopping like moving up an down when I spin it. There is no latteral movement at all, just up and down.
I did not balace it, but I'm not spinning it fast enough to induce any kind of compression of the springs.

Sometimes the tire will not seat right and cause a pogo hop. There is usually some sort of moulded line near the rim on the tire, if you visually watch the line you will see it disappear into the rim and then reappear. I have had to break down tires multiple times to get it right.

Yup, I experienced that last time around. When I spin the wheel this time I can watch the rim and the tire going up and down. I’m sure it’s the wheel.

if the rim is actually egg shaped truing wont help, pull it off and have it balanced at a shop to make sure.B)

Chopper.before going nutz.make your'self an indicator. get the bike so's wheel can be spun whilst mounted. anything, a pile of bricks/ ruler whatever, and watch rim run-out at inside of rim. this will tell if rim is true to hub. then check at outside. this will reveal possible rim ding.; flatted rim. spoked wheels are fit, 1st up &down then side to side. with most specs being less than a mm. for either. I hope for your' sake you've. a crappy tire or it's not seated, trying to take the hop out of a 30 year-old rim usually begins w/ spokes & hoop. G

they have these at harbor freight. you could make something like it to hold the axle while spinning the wheel, then you need some type of non-movable pointer that will point at the rim and give you a reference for out of round condition

are you sure its not the bearings causing this? even though they are new, maybe one was damaged on install?

Thanks for the help guys. I set up a truing stand in the basement...er..I mean workshop and actually have this thing spinning much better that it was. I can't make it perfect because the wheel is egg shapped, just like Plummen said. How'd you know Plummen, without even seeing it! Hmmmmm.....
