headlight brace
08 Jan 2009 05:52
I am starting a 75 z1 restoration and the headlight shell has been taken loose because of a fairing being on the bike.
The shell is there, but I think there should be a bracket on the frame at the bottom of the shell to hold the light angle and tilt. There is a nut welded to the inside of the headlight shell for a bolt to thread into. Does anyone have a pic of this bracket and its mounting or a good description of what it is fastned to?
Thanks Lynn

My 75 is also missing the bracket and If i remember correctly the 73 and 74 I sold recently were missing the brackets as well(trust me I would have nabbed one of em for me 75). The IPL shows a bracket that mount to headlight and brake splitter.Maybe Jeff@Z1 will chime in

Sandy, the bracket at the bottom of the page is for holding the headlight shell to the forks. They're looking for the bracket that stabilizes the light shell.

Looking at the Kawasaki.com parts diagram I see they stopped using the brace in 1976 while keeping the other parts the same. Unfortunately, ma Kaw doesn't show the parts diagram for the '75 Z1. Does anyone know the brace part number? BTW, the '77 KZ650C1 (and some others) also have the hole & nut in the bottom of the shell but did not use a bracket. I guess they just used the same shell as the earlier models. Ed

Yes the no. 21 that streetfighter circled is what I was looking for. The only thing I can see to mount it to on my bike would be the splitter coupling for the fron brake.

Part # is 23064-009, used only on the Z1 up to frame #55500, so somewhere in 1975 they quit putting them on. Like Ed said, KZ650B-C don't use it, KZ650D does and KZ1000s use it too, but not the same part. This part was unique to the Z1.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

That bracket puts unneeded vibration on the headlight and the light fails prematurely, thats why they quit using the at the factory. I do not use one on my Z1.

My '79 MKII also came with the bottom bracket. Maybe they started using it again?? Anyway, I think the 2 side bolts would be enough to hold it steady. As mentioned, there are many bikes that don't use that third mounting point.
