Best Way to Change the Front Sprocket? was created by bountyhunter
One of those bizarre moments: I absolutely have zero recall of something I already did, namely changing the front sprocket on my 750 twin some years back....

That being the case:

What's the best way to loosen the front nut?

I still have the huge socket that fits it which I bought last time.

I do NOT have the magic tool to hold the sprocket while I turn the nut... but, I still changed it before without that tool.

Can I crank the nut against the chain while holding the rear brake?

yes you can, the best way of course is with the tool but when in a jam use a impact gun hold the back brake down and impact it off.

Don't have an impact gun, but I do have a breaker bar and a hammer....

try to find somebody with a gun you can borrow it will be a lot easier the breaker bar will work but sometimes the shock from gun will break up any loctite on the nut.

Or you could get someone to sit on the bike, put it in gear, and apply both brakes.;)

The best would be using Kawasaki Engine Sprocket tool 57001-118 but good luck on finding it....

Question, would a pickle fork (with some slight modification) accomplish the same thing?...

Hmmm, I wonder but I think this would work since the fork is also skewed (thicker wedge design back to the base).

NOTE to thyself: Modify one of my old forks...

you had better do it your self in case of slippage you wouldn't want some one to sue your ass for pain and suffering if they slipped and barked their dainty didgets would you.

When i did the front sprocket on the z1 a bit ago, i used an impact gun, i just put it in gear and backed the nut off without a prob.
