If addressing the long front engine mounting bolt
that spans the frame down-tubes --

Here's what worked to get a longer "bolt" on the KZ900:

Purchase a longer plain steel rod from the local hardware store, hacksaw to length, and cut threads on both ends, and use a nut as the bolt head.

Considered but did not pursue the idea of finding a long appropriately threaded rod and cutting it to length to avoid cutting threads in a plain rod. Just preferred not to have visible threads in the rod running across front of the engine.

Seems strange that the KZ750 bolt is 14 inches long, when the oem KZ900 bolt is only 12 3/16" long. Was thinking about possibility of adapting a longer bolt from a different model bike.

Good Luck! :)

That was what i was going to do. Just as long as its grade 8 hardened steel.
The oem bolt is 330mm long,(approx. 13 inches). Because of the case guards, i need the new bolt to be about 350mm long,(about 13 3/4 long) to accomodate the case guards

looks like i'm shit out of luck. Searched and searched and cant find a long hex bolt. Was going to use threaded rod, but the ones i saw werent strong enough. What did everyone else do when they installed their case guards?

I finally have to put an end to this. Extensive searching showed no metric bolt 10 mm diameter, 14 inches long 8.8 grade.
I searched Fastenal, (thanks Veter bob), and ended up ordering a 3/8 diameter bolt 14 inches long grade 5.
The only thing is that the bolt comes plain not zinc coated. Being anal I guess I'll rough sand the bolt and just spray paint it.

(Just learned that SAE Grade 5 is equivalent to Metric Grade 8.8 and SAE Grade 8 is equivalent to Metric 10.9)

Oh, BTW, the damn bolt cost $10.00

To toughen up the spray painted bolt bake in the oven at 350 for an hour(open the windows as it might smell).

Still isnt over. Went to Fastenall to pick up my 14" long bolt. Took out my tape measure and guess what, its only 12" long. Then I'm told, Fastenall doesnt have a 14" long 3/8 bolt.
Was going to use threaded rod, but unable to find grade 5 or grade 8 threaded rod. The ones i did find seem like you could bend them by hand.

Thanks, but no good. A stainless bolt is not made for strength. I would need at least a grade 5 bolt.

actually truckspring does have a grade 5 threaded rod 14 inches long. Will probably end up getting that. Thanks for the research.
Oh, btw, just got done doing a 225 mile round tripper and those highway pegs worked like a charm. Got 55 mpg out of my 750 shaft 4 cylinder. Maybe I need to richen up the carbs a bit. Nah, leave it alone.

I have a set of pegs on my 1000 and agree, it sure is nice to stretch out on those long rides. Even if I kinda feel like one of those "Other" bike riders. The 1000 has settled in to averaging between 45 - 48 mpg which I am thrilled with. The 550 is still the champ with a consistent 54 mpg. Glad you are riding and be safe.
