caliper question

i'm looking to put a dual disc setup on the front of my bike. i have everything but the caliper. is there a right and left handed caliper? or are they universal for both sides?

Theres a left and right handed one. Just make sure you're looking at yours when you look at a pic of the one you're buying. Should be a mirror image.

Not sure about the 650 set-up,but on my 1000,I used 2 identical calipers,but had to flip one of the brackets around...pretty straight-forward,as far as the caliper mount went.Had to make up 2 new solid sections of brake-line though,because moving the calipers to the rear of the forks,changed the distance and location,so the old lines were unusable.

will 2 calipers from an 80 kz1000 fit? they look the same, kawasaki say's some 900's fit. are all the mounting bolt hole the same. what i'm saing is if i cant find an exact match to my caliper via the cross reference sheet at kaw. will 2 other calipers fit. most of the brake discs are the same for my bike.

I think the biggest concern is that the mounting points be the same...got any specs on them?

if the discs are the same my guess would be the mounting braket space. they look the same but there's no way to tell unless i measure. however this site www.redlinecycle.com/Brake%20-%20Caliper%20I.D..html
say's the early style calipers from the kz900 and kz1000 are the same. the late model style that i have wih the banjo fitting say's there is really no difference other than the fitting. thanks and i wouldappreciate any more feedback.

If your 80 KZ650B uses four bolt rotors, then I'd be almost willing to bet money that KZ1000 calipers will fit, along with 83-85 GPz750, and 76-80 KZ750 twins.

I think there is a real good possibility that all KZ and GPz calipers up through 85 will work.

On my 750 twins I have installed 79 KZ650SR calipers, 78 KZ1000 calipers, and 83 GPz750, calipers, and all bolted on.


Currently I have 83 GPz750 calipers, 79 KZ1000 drilled rotors, and a 95 GPz1100 master cylinder, and I am "real" happy with the way it stops (except the once when it didn't). Best brakes I have ever had on a twin.

The GPz750 had a 10" rotor, the 79 KZ1000 had 12" rotors, that extra leverage helps out a "lot". My 79 KZ750 twin will easily out brake GPzInfested's 750 Turbo

I wish it would accelerate as fast as the 750 Turbo

thanks steel.. i'm not sure what you mean about the 4 bolt calipers.. do you have a pic? here's a pic of what looks just like the caliper on my bike except this pic is from a kz1000.

oh, btw i have a 79 b3

the rotors are held on hub with 4 bolts,i think the pistons in the dual disc calipers might be smaller since there are 2 calipers doing work instead of 1B)

Most calipers (if not all) are held on by two bolts.

You generally can't use 12" rotors on a bike that originally had 10" rotors because the caliper is mounted lower on the fork leg, the caliper will hit the rotor.
