All Balls makes the bearings and includes the seals too. 28 years and no servicing? Shame on you!!! I bet they fall apart when you remove them. I've replaced, and upgraded, the races and bearings on both wheels and steering head with All Balls. Great fit, and reasonably priced. I'd never go back to the ball-bearing style. Peace of mind.

I have replaced the bearings on 4 bikes. All had 25,000+ on the clocks. 2 of them had visible bearing damage. Only 1 had damage you could feel with the front end assembled. It was like turning a ratchet with the selector between left and right. Now my rule of thumb is 15-20K and you're gonna get new bearings and I go with tapered roller. Increasing the surface from ball to roller just makes sense. When done it is "like butter!" after.

I was going to just relube the stock stem ball bearings because it was smooth. However, after I jacked the bike (KZ1000) up off the ground it was still smooth until I pulled the fork tubes out to rebuild then I felt the detents. Talked to Jeff @ Z1 and now have a new set of "All Balls" roller bearings w/ seals, $36. It was a pretty easy job too!
