Nick,

I replaced my stock 3.5 gal tank from a '78 KZ1000 LTD (B2) with a larger 4.5 gal tank which I believe was from a '78 A2A. It was a direct bolt-on. The only difference (other than size) is that it uses a vacuum petcock.

I don't know if my B2 has the same frame/tank mounts as your 900. But if it does, the A2A tank should work.

Thanks Skyman. Can the vaccum petcock be bypassed?

I'm not sure what you mean by "bypass".

Do you mean replace it with a manual petcock?

If so, yes. You can get an adapter plate that will allow you convert from a bolt-on to a screw-on manual petcock.

If you are asking if you can keep the vacuum petcock without hooking up the vacuum hose--no. You wouldn't want to do that.

But if your intake manifolds have a capped vacuum port on them, you can run a vacuum hose from one of these ports to the petcock to actuate it.

Thanks again, would any of the carbs need to be adjusted when using the vaccum port?

Shouldn't need to.

Do your carbs have vacuum ports, or do you have vacuum ports on your intake manifolds?

On my B2, the vacuum ports are on the manifolds. I just removed the cap from the #2 manifold port and ran a hose from it to the petcock.

I've also got the 'peanut' tank on my 900 LTD. I read somewhere that Kaw used the smaller tank to make the engine look bigger. Whatever.
My normal range is 120 miles before I need reserve, and I ALWAYS try to fill up before then. But 120 miles is about two hours of riding, and that seems like plenty. When I ride with others, most everyone is happy to stop for gas before I'm desperate, so I'm not the 'weak sister' in the group.
A standard size tank on an LTD sure makes the bike seem bigger when you're sitting on it, and shouldn't interfere with anything on the bike.

No, only the 'A' model (= standard)...the 'B' 1000 model (LTD) is the same volume.

The smaller tanks on the LTDs were to make the engine look bigger and to give them a (chopper) look that was popular at the time.other than petcock issues the A model tank is a direct swap.My 79 1000 B has one on it right now for the reasons you have mentioned.More fuel capacity=fewer pit stops.as for the vacuum petcok i prefer the old style-less trouble.

the 76 and 77 "A" tanks didn't use a vacuum petcock.... only 78 and newer do.
