RPIIAN:
I have put over 10,000 miles on my '82 KZ650, with 26/13 = 2.00 gearing, and reached the following conclusions:
1. Starting off in 1st gear is acceptable, but don't count on drag racing.
2. The engine runs quite and cruises well with the new gearing. Shift points are very pleasant. Has adequate power.
3. Gas mileage is much better than with stock gearing, especially at lower speeds. At a steady 55 MPH, I get about 62 MPG.
4. Mileage decreases the faster you go, until at about 80 MPH, it equals what I experienced with the stock 33/13 = 2.54 gearing. The wide engine and the aerodynamics translate into just pushing too much wind out of the way.
5. Over about 75 MPH, or at this speed with a strong head wind or a long uphill pull, the engine begins to labor a little.
6. The bike will run faster in 4th gear than in 5th. Just too much torque load on the engine in 5th.
7. The 2.00 gearing for the 650 is a little too high. A KZ1000 could use this gearing, but the 650 is a little overloaded.

I changed back to the stock gearing the other day, just for fun, but I hated it. I knew that the 26 tooth would be an overkill, but it is still a far more pleasant and economical ride that the stock gearing. Next time, I will probably go with about a 2.20 gearing, or something like 30/14, which is 2.14. Hope this helps others who can benefit from my research.
