Kazoo & fish,
thanks for your advice and thread refernces. I am convinved these plastic sleeves have been binding and may not be the originals, ratherbeing some home fabricated bits of plastic tube which bind when the sliders move.

However what the purpose of the originals is escapes me. My manual says "friction" and it may be to keep the caliper stationary when the brake is released otherwise the caliper would rattle around loose on the sliders bringing the pads in contact with the disc and leading to unecessary pad wear?

Since you have not identified the year/model of the bike, I made a guess and picked 82 KZ1000J.

that the one! A 1982 J and the curious parts (sleeves I called them) are numbered 92028.

Has anyone got any idea what they are for and any problems with removing them. My guess was excess pad wear?
