I'd like to replace the bolts on this Z250 twin I'm doing up.
Anyone know how to measure a bolt?

I know it sounds daft but I've contacted a couple of dealers and they dont do sets for my bike. So I'd have to buy them seperately.

They seem to be measured as M5, M6 etc. But how do I know what this equates to. Nowt in my manuals and cant find it on the internet. And I dont want to go buying hundereds when I only need a dozen or so.

Any help appreciated as always.

You could buy a couple of sets for different models and out of those you should be able to find enough to do your bike. I got two sets and had enough to change almost every bolt on the bike including the motor. Things like the front master cylinder, clutch lever perch, all the bolts under the side covers for the electrics and things like that.

Metric fastener size designation nomenclature. As fully explained in ISO 965-1, Sect. 5, metric fastener size designations always begin with capital M or MJ followed by fastener nominal diameter and thread pitch, both in units of millimeters (mm), separated by the symbol "x", as follows. M10 x 1.5-6g-S means metric fastener thread profile M, fastener nominal size (nominal major diameter) 10 mm, thread pitch 1.5 mm, external thread tolerance class 6g, and thread engagement length group S ("short").

The above is from the internet and basically says:
M = metric
first number = diameter
second number = thread pitch

Then you just need to get the right length.

I bought two sets of stainless socket head cap screws for my GPz motor and carbs from this source...very reasonable, knowledgeable and helpful.

as a brit you should have no problem getting bolts dude.
not like here in the states where they still work in old money lol so to speak.
buy a pitch gauge from halfords too but you should be able to go into any bike shop in the uk and get a set of Allen bolts for your bike if not eBay or look in yellow pages for a company that sells nuts bolts and fasters there was one in basildon where i used to live it was like a candy store with pick and mix lol.

hi again try inox fastners they sell every type
of ut bolt washer ,size pich you name it so long
as its metric look them up on the web got all
my bolts ect there;)

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to get a fairly inclusive assortment package of nuts, bolts, screws, etc for our bikes? Not necessarily one designed specifically for our bikes, but a general assortment.

Also, are the fasteners on, say, a 1978 KZ750 Twin typically all metric?

Have you tried Z1Enterprizes? They sell stainless steel bolt sets for most KZ models. I replaced mine last fall.

I have to second the Z1 suggestion. Nice product, decent price. Oh, and yea, my '79 750 twin is all metric.

two options come to mind as ive been thinking of this my self.

(1) ive seen several ppl who have parted a bike and basically sold all the nuts and bolts too on ebay!.

(2) call up a local salvage yard that parts metric bikes
ask them if they will sell you a bucket of assorted nuts n bolts.

im going to do one of these two things soon as im running out of nuts n bolts lol and i bought a shed full with me when i moved from the uk.
