Smoke could be the seafoam, it will more than likely smoke every start till the seafoam is gone, Congratulations on becoming a KZ owner.

Are you aware you need oil that's rated for "wet clutch" systems. You need oil with a "JESO MA" rating. Recommended oil weight will be on the oil fill cap above the rear brake peddle on the RH side of the engine.

Yes on the toggle switch. Run/off switch and start button on right control do nothing. Turn on switch and taillight comes on , ready to start. On/off on left hand control for headlight.

This is a MUST fix. I don't need to remind you of the devastating consequences if this comes off and gas drips on hot engine part. They are cheep on EvilBay. Don't mess with this.

I used some oil/gas resistant loctite to put it back in right with a good seal. It was hard to pull out and I'm amazed it didn't leak or seep at all but it should be good now. Did you see my response on the toggle? How the hell are you responding to specific msgs, every time I post it just tacks in on the end of the thread.

Yes I saw the reply. So the toggle is the replacement for the R and L hand controls. YOU should trace thru the wiring to make sure you have fuses in the system.

IF you use the "Quote" option next to the reply you can selectively edit your original post to highlight important sentences. It takes practice to not erase the (quote) parts of the paragraph that starts and ends the post.

I will retrace but there is a small fuse box inline that has 3 tube style fuses in it (not blown). If I do the pushbutton start it won't be any easier to steal than flipping the toggle and kicking it BUT couldn't I just replace the toggle switch with a keyed switch for a bit of anti theft. Tomorrow I wanna pull the starter cover and inspect, study, and then will go into the starter button decision process. And thanks for the congrats. Guys can comment on how hacked up the bike is but it doesn't make me any less excited and this thing rips. I love the the powerband compared to other bikes I've had or ridden. What a beast.

Well it sounds like you were making some headway while I was cough.. cough.. working yesterday. lol Amazing what a difference a hot battery makes. Even if it is charging, they will not run very well off of the charging system alone with a bad battery. Also a good thing you paid it off, I do hope you got a clean title in the process so that you can properly license it. That bike would not pass a state inspection here, but your area may be different. I know.. details.. :) Nothing happens over night.

Yep, as everyone has already pointed out, that bike is thoroughly hacked. A playbook of how NOT to do things.. all you need to do now to make it a ride-able sled is to try to piece back a bunch of the hacked off stuff. The gauges and ignition switch are kinda "must have" stuff. I would try to find the pieces the PO took off and go from there. The Adrenalin does run high after that first little taste. Enjoy!

Definitely making progress! As Mikaw said earlier we need to find a way to skip the jobs part! :) Clear title is being notarized as we speak and luckily I live in the great state of Montana where a headlight, taillight and one mirror will pass inspection anyway. My last bike was a 76 GS400 twin that was hacked about the same as this one and it passed no problem. The officer asked me what color he wanted me to put down and we found a touch of blue left on the tank, so blue it was haha. I buy broken shit for the price and fulfillment of making it better so I'm proud to have this KZ cuz' it will only get better. Gonna try to scrape clean the engine code today and am replacing a bunch of cover bolts with stainless allen. Odds and ends today as I got a sick kiddo on my hands, she's 4 and was pretty helpful with the one ignition cover we did yesterday. : )
