You CAN use a regular one but you don't want to leave it on too long. Apparently a regular charger doesn't compensate properly over time. However, a short charge is fine.
I run a Shorai in my GPZ and other than a solenoid sticking and frying my first one, it's been fine thus far. I do worry about overcharge, but I check the battery weekly and my charging system to make sure it's not doing too much,

This is what scares me the age of our charging systems (failing) and the location of that battery.... ouch !!! ..... I really like the idea of weight savings though.

I put an Anti Gravity Li-ion battery in my 76 750 twin this year and it's been a champ. I did install a new regulator/rectifier as recommended by Anti Gravity. Got mine from oregonmotorcyleparts.com I can see why you would want to replace the r/r cause the mid seventies electronics would be primitive and prone to failure. What I don't get is why you need a special charger for a li-ion battery if you are running it in your vintage scooter. While I'm riding the battery is being charged by a 40 year old alternator. Ya think they designed it to charge one cell at a time? Besides, if it blows up I got a steel plate between the battery and my nuts (the seat pan). I worry a lot more about mini vans

Installed a Ballistic performance lithium ion battery in my ELR clone back about 8 years ago. Works great, haven't touched the battery in that time at all. I ignore it in the winter and it fires right up every spring. I will be putting in another one when it finally dies. I say go for it.

I decided to buy a new lithium for my DR650 and take the used Shorai lithium out of the DR and put it in KZ1000. Why? Because the DR gets ridden in the middle of nowhere on dirt roads and has no kickstarter. So it got the new one. Anyway the used Shorai lithium in the KZ is awesome so far. It cranks the hi-comp motor much faster than a lead acid ever did. And of course it's tiny and weightless.

Before installing a lithium battery make SURE your charging system is working properly. Ed

I put a Lithium battery in my 79 KZ 1000 stocker and it works great.........It has an internal control system that limits how much charge it can accept and that also allows it to be charged by non-lithium units. Nevertheless I use a Noco Genius G1100 charger (that has a Lithium setting - $45) that I have had to use only once after spending the whole day just doing a ton of short trips that didn't let the bikes charging system do its job. The battery is a Featherweight Lithium by www.WPS-INC.com......it did cost a bit though $ 175.00 from my local Bike shop.
Oh....and it only weighs 1.75 lbs. :silly: and has four battery poles (2+ and 2-) which could come in handy
