I did basically the same idea but used paper, like a cardstock type stuff off some type of thin box. The great thing about paper is it really never hardens and leaks where an oring does. I did this on my 79,000 mile KZ1000MK2 because the tach drive is hopelessly seized in the head and nothing will *ever* budge it, trust me.

I had a minor oil leak, more like weeping, where the tach cable connects to the engine. I loosened the knurled collar and pulled the tach cable out. Then I put a small oring (the one I used was one from an old battery filler cap) on the tach cable between the collar and the tach cable flange. I cleaned the oil from the head and put the cable and collar back. I have not seen any more weeping after about 2,500 miles. It took 10 minutes and cost nothing. This may or may not work if the oil leak is really bad. Ed Blue '77 KZ650C1

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Hey Ron,
I remember years ago telling an old Triumph rider I was heading out to buy a gasket and he said "Thats what I always thought cereal boxes were for "

Thanks for the heads up on the tach seal size and shape. I have learned very quickly that the '83 K1 model can be a parts challenge.

I went with an o-ring solution. Only $2.00 for a set of different sizes.

When I removed all the tape that the previous owner had used, trying and solve the problem I found another issue. The jacket of the tach cable was cracked. It was so warm and sunny Sunday, in Indy and I wanted to ride.

Decisions? Ride with the small amount of fluid or wait for a tach cable. Plan C in action - a little permatex and electrical tape from the tool box and I was rolling in no time.

New tach cable to come later.

Thanks for all the advice - more pictures to come as I TLC my purchase back to daily rider condition.

Hi,

I read through the posts, bought the oil seal kit but still have a question. The previous owner had done some work on this bike and it seems anything he could put in backward or jury rig, he did. The previous tach guide showed obvious signs of a pair of vice grips or something, so I know he was fiddling with it and I don't trust what I found.

My question is, which way does the seal go in? I'm thinking it goes with the metal portion to the inside, larger portion to the outside, but I wanted to confirm this before I crank it up and find I ruined the new one.

Thanks,
