i used to have a 550. No, the 1981 kz550 rear signals are not running lights, they are turn signals only (have 2 wires). your front signals are the running lights (have 3 wires)
i suggest looking at the wiring diagram for your bike, it is a very simple arrangement.

LifeLiberty, I have been going over the wiring diagram and I can see that the rears are not running lights. I thought I had found my problem but now I have a new problem (big suprise). To start the wiring at the rear of my bike is a mess. Everything is zip tied together in a big mass of wire and electrical tape. I was almost afraid to open it up. Anyways, I found some chaffed wires and seperated them all. I even found what later turned out to be a brake light modulator wrapped up in there. I got that to work, but now when I turn on the left turn signal, the right brake light flashes with the turn signal. Also, I have a Windjammer fairing and I know the front turn signals have never worked as running lights on that. I checked and sure enough they are 1157 bulbs also. I guess it's time to get out the meter, the soldering iron and just redo the whole mess. While I'm in there I think I'll replace the fuse panel with one of these:

if you want running lights its easy to do if you have 3 wire turn signal (1157) terminals. (2 wire terminals are blinkers only)
tail blinking with signal fix blinker ground or tail light ground, it's one of 'em

Bob, you might remove the aftermarket brake modulator until you get all the stock stuff working correctly. that might help eliminate some confusion. I use the posilock connectors to temporarily make connections while modifying wiring until I know what I'm doing permanently. And even then sometimes I permanently use them.

I have a "Dole" light on top of my trunk and that is the only thing the modulator is wired in to operate and I am reasonably sure that wiring is okay. It can't hurt to eliminate as many variables as possible however.
Gris.....ummmmm.....ewwww! I'm a big boy but damn, that needs a "WIDE LOAD" sign. So does this mean you're into mopeds also? You knw as in what do a fat girl and a moped have in common....  :woohoo:

Nope, both fun to ride but you wouldn't want your friends to see you doing it.....
