Trouble Starting My KZ LTD 440 1982
01 Oct 2013 20:57
Hey folks,
I'm new to the motorcycle world and this is my first bike. I will do my best to describe what is happening.
Basically I am getting the click sound when trying to start my bike ( no kickstart ). I replaced the spark plugs, changed the oil, and have a full charge on the battery (around 13v)
The bike rode home fine for 50 mins, aside from heating up at one point because the bike was low on oil, and the choke was on too high.
I am hearing the click sound from the left side, around the solenoid. Not sure what I need to replace. I was able to start the bike a few days ago but since then I am getting less and less response from the starter, and now I have nothing but the click sound.
please help!?

Have you tried bump starting (push starting) the bike to make sure the engine turns over ok? Ed

Would get the battery load-tested -- usually for free anywhere batteries are sold, such as Walmart, AutoZone, etc.
Meanwhile, it's okay to try a brief jump start from a good automobile battery PROVIDED the automobile ignition key is removed and the automobile engine is NOT RUNNING.
If the engine cranks over normally when jumped to the automobile battery, but fails to crank over normally when using only the bike battery, then the bike battery is likely at fault, regardless of its voltage reading.
Good Fortune!

Since you said it overheated due to a lack of oil, I would try jump starting it just to make sure the engine is free to turn over. Ed

I'm going to try push starting the bike down my driveway next. So I put the bike in second gear, hold the clutch, ride down the hill (it is pretty steep) hit top speed, release the clutch,(hopefully starting the bike) then hold the clutch again to counter losing control correct?

Yes. First gear will work too if you cannot select second gear. Ed

No luck with the push start. Any suggestions? Should I check out the starter/buy a new solenoid?

When you tried push starting it, could you hear the engine turn over? If so, at least you know it's not seized. Ed

:pinch: put the bike on the center stand and put the trans in a higher gear (3rd or 4th, 5th) you can turn the engine over by using the rear wheel.... it may be easier to remove the spark plugs then you do not have to fight the compression of the engine...just to be sure the engine is not seized/locked up
