Z1R Distance Meter was created by bluflame
Does anyone know anything about the Z1R Distance Meter. I cant find out anything about the unit. I have 2 wires from the signal box which according to the wiring diagram go to the Distance Meter. I have had a look at Kawasaki.com and cant find the part.

Anyone with any knowledge about this your help would be much appreciated.

I'm only guessing here, but thinking its to allow self-cancelling of the turn signals on time and or distance?

If so....it may look like this ?...

Got one with my Z1R...but wasn't fitted, always wondered where it went and what function it performed.

The speed sensor is mounted on the input to the speedometer. Kawasaki just added this little gizmo in line with the speedo cable. It screws onto the speedo, and the end of the cable screws into it.

Here is a picture:

The control box has a 2x3 pin connector which plugs into the main harness, and two wire with bullet connectors that plug into the speed sensor.

The sensor itself is just a reed switch and a magnetic disk with multiple poles. I've disassembled and rebuilt several of these. The only way I've seen them fail is the square shaft that mates with the speedo can snap off. I think found one with a broken reed switch too.

The turn signal switch is released (centered) by a solenoid in the left switch housing. This solenoid has a thermal fuse in series with it, which was blown in my bike (one time use).

My bike had a bad control box (burned a hole in the back), which shorted the solenoid on until the fuse blew. I replaced the thermal fuse, along with the control box, and it worked great for a while. Now I have a bad connection somewhere and it works about 50% of the time.

Basically, I can tell you anything you need to know to get your setup working. :)

I don't recognize it. As far as I know that is not present on the '78 Z1R. Is it from an '80 Z1R?

It looks like it mounts on a tab near the battery box similar to the flasher units on the 78, but the flashers don't have a pigtail cable. I've looked through the online parts diagrams for the '80 Z1R and I don't see anything that looks like that.

Do you have any more info?

Will venture a swag as possibly a beeper/buzzer audio for the turn signals.

For instance, the 1976 KZ900-B1 LTD came with a similar appearing component shown on its wiring diagram as a "turn signal alarm" that has a brown wire and an orange wire.

It had a pitiful anemic little sound, like a squirrel gagging, and unbefitting to a big macho motorcycle.

Good Fortune! :)

It came with my 80 Z1R Mk11 D3 but was never fitted.

I think Pattons hit the nail on the head with his interpretation.
Would interested to find out where it goes and what it sounds like.

However...guessing it would sound like a cheap arsed truck reversing or a squirrel gagging.

The turn signal alarm is shown on wiring diagrams for all 1976 KZ900 models.

For '77~'79 KZ1000's, a turn signal alarm is shown only on European models A1, A2 and A3.
Not on D1 or D2, and not on US-Canadian models.

I haven't seen a wiring diagram for the 1980 KZ1000-D3.

The alarm was hardly noticeable when wearing a helmet, and sounded even worse when it got wet.
When fitted, it was in sync with the blinkers.
Could run battery voltage through it to hear the sound.

Good Fortune! :)

That does seem like a good guess. Looking at the parts diagram for the KZ900, the line drawing of the buzzer certainly looks a lot like the picture.

But I only see the buzzer on the 76/77 KZ900 (27040-002) and the 76/77 KZ400 (27040-001). I still haven't found anything like that on the MkII or '80 Z1R (A4,B4,D3).
