Ignition Timing vs Speed

Okay so I finally got my bike put back together after dealing with some problems. My question is , How does ignition timing gap effect acceleration through gears? My bike accelerates rather slow where before I could drag it up the road fairly quick. Im assuming its the ignition timing . It is set to .305 I believe , where as before it was .354 . Just curious if this change in gap is my problem. -Tyler

The gap controls the dwell; this is the percent of rotation that the coils receive a charge. You don't want the dwell to be too much or too little, so you should set your points gap to the spec in the manual. On the KZ650 the gap should be set to .35mm; your model bike may be different.

The timing of the opening of the points relative to the crankshaft position controls when the coils fire. This normally is set with the "F" mark at the pointer at idle (950-1050 rpm), and it will (should) advance to a max level as the the rpm rise. Ed

Okay , And for once I got my kz750 to idle right. Before it was 2000 rpm And now its slightly above 1000rpm. I will play with the gap alittle bit and see what changes occur at different settings.

Make sure everything on the advancer is clean and lubed

Have you given any thought to switching to electronic ignition? Or are you keeping everything stock?

I have thought about switching to electronic ignition. I wouldnt know where to begin with it as I just got familiar with my stock ignition timing . How does the electronic ignition work exactly? Installation, tuning, and where to get one for a 1978 kz750 twin ? And I have sprayed my advancer numerous times with wd40.

WD-40 is not a good lube for moving parts. I use a light coating of high temp grease on my bike's advancers moving parts(pivots for the weights, the tube the advancer moves on, and the spring attachment areas).

I have a can of grease in my garage , I'll give that a go to see if it helps. I have the bike air-ing out right now. I Think it flooded and fouled my plugs , probably too rich ect. I will return with results, Thanks all

Pop your fill cap and give your oil a "sniff test" if it smells like gas, it's OUTTA there!

forgive me but what do you mean outta there ? Meaning I need more oil cuz i am low?

So I just pulled my spark plugs and wow . left plug is pitch black and right plug was brand new not a dang scratch except it was bent at the tip . How far in should I be tightening these. Im guessing not too tight cuz i just bent a spark plug

Sorry if I was unclear! I mean change your oil if it smells like gas.
