So the relay, that I've been using for about 4 years malfunctioned in the end.

They all do. Electromechanical devices always eventually fail.

In my opinion, the only way to truly fix this system is to get a new handlebar control assembly, and replace all the wiring and connectors between your battery and coils.

Wire doesn't fail. It's the ignition switch or harness connectors or fuse connections.

Had a similar problem, 2 zip ties fixed it but carry a spare just in case.

I thought about this when I first did the coil mod and how I might do a roadside repair if the need arose. If I remember the wiring diagram correctly it should be possible to disconect at the relay both the wire from the kill switch and the wire going to the coils and connect them together which should essentially take the relay out of the circuit and put things back to the original state.

I think your right JR.
Just have to think of that when the time comes.
I'd need a jumper wire, as my relay plugs into a white plastic pigtail (plug).

Depending on which relay your using, the singe or double pole, the 87 and 87a will either be the same contact or two separate ones. If single pole so 87 and 87a are the same contact, the just take your Battery wire, #30 and put it along side your coil wire on the 87 or 87a. Instant Hot Wire.

Ah yes. Hotwire !
A long time ago in a far away place I put the key in the ignition on a CB250 and the whole switch just disintegrated. Fell totally apart. I think it took all of 5 minutes to figure out how to hotwire and I was on my way ;)
