Does anyone recognise this sound? I've replaced the solenoid & i've found out the starter button wont work as the starter does nothing when its pressed. The bike will be getting a full rewire in the future but i want to get it started before i remove the engine & get to work on it.

What is wrong?

I should add that all i've done mechanically is replaced the springs in the starter motor clutch & adjusted the cam chain tensioner in accordance with the manual.

Inside the nose of the starter is a planetary gear set used as a gear reduction. It sounds like the ring gear on that gear set is spinning, but it's supposed to be locked to the case.

Thanks Steve. Will i need to remove the starter & strip it or is that the gear that the starter chain runs on that you're talking about?

Well i just took the starter motor off & it wont come apart, the 2 long screws that hold it together seem to have seized in. So, do i replace it with the same item or is there a better srarter to look for?

Also, to test it by applying 12volts where do i connect the negative terminal?, anywhere on the leg that attaches it to the engine? & the + goes on the only terminal? I tried that & it wont spin! Sorry for the dumbass questions but i am learning!

12V to the stud, ground to anywhere on the case, preferably clean metal. The starter should spin, if it don't spark when you connect the last cable then you don't have a good connection.

Used starters are fairly cheap, whether they are any good or not is the question.

It's inside the nose of the starter and you have to take it apart to fix it. There are starter rebuild parts available also, but first you have to get it apart.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationOk, i stripped the starter motor & there was a loose piece in the nose, looked like it was broken off somewhere! Had to cut the outside bolts with a grinder to get them off as they were seized AND painted over!!

I've seen this kit on ebay & the brushes are totally different, how do i install the 2 smaller brushes? When its all apart i'd better just do it all. The 'x' screws that hold the brushes to the outer body have been painted over too & i havent managed to get them out yet, any tips?

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationAlso, the 2nd pic in this advert;
cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem...trksid=p5197.c0.m619

& the pic in this advert are the same.

..........the reason i went for the 1st one is the $20 difference in shipping to the UK

They could all possible be the same internals instead of making different ones? I dunno, just guessing but it does say in the list it will fit my bike. I do see your point though.
