I've read/heard that a business card thickness will get the point gap close enough for the engine to run.

Reminder -- Should dress/clean contacts and set gap before adjusting timing.

The more I read the more I see conflicting answers....

Confusion in researching the matter might result from different stock coil mounting positions.

For instance, 1/4 coil on large Kaw fours typically mounts on left (shift lever) side of bike, with 2/3 coil mounted on right (brake pedal) side of bike.

KZ650 mounting is opposite.

Regardless of its mounting position, whichever coil receives signal from left-hand points/module/pickup is supposed to fire outside plugs 1&4.

And whichever coil receives signal from right-hand points/module/pickup is supposed to fire inside plugs 2&3.

Further confusion may be contributed by an erroneous or inconclusive wiring diagram.

Good Fortune! :)

What were they thinking when they changed everything around on the KZ650. That just doesn't make sense.

Anyway, what are you using to time and gap the points. Just curious.

Ok guys, Same problem here. After a 5 year complete restoration I am ready to fire the bike up. I understand one coil fires cylinders 1 & 4 and one coil fires cylinders 2 & 3, but on a stock coil which plug wires go to which cylinder, or does it even matter? Do cylinders fire in pairs?

Please help.

No, the ignition coil ports(where the sparkplug wires go)fires both at the same time, so as long as the correct coil goes to the correct sparkplug, it should work.

Use which ever port to reach the sparkplugs.

Z1 ign coil to outside plugs is located on left shift lever side of bike , and coil to inside plugs is located on right foot brake side of bike.

Just so it's all in one thread, the 550 and 750-fours are setup like the 650: 1,4 coil on the right, 2,3 coil on the left. (As Patton said, it is opposite of the big KZ-fours.)

And, (as has been established,) on all motors (big or small KZ-fours), the points or pickups near the front of the motor are for 2,3, and the rear points or pickups are for 1,4.

Hi Guys,

Maybe I was unclear. Yes I understand the left coil goes to cylinders 1 & 4 (black wire) and the right coil goes to 2 & 3 (green), but my questions are 1) Do cylinders 1 & 4 fire at the same time, do cylinders 2&3 fire at the same? in other words is there two power strokes at a time? Also, if they do not fire at the same time, how can you tell which plug wire goes to which cylinder? For example, on the coil that goes to cylinders 1 & 4 (outsides) there are two plug wires, but which plug wire will go to 1 and which will go to 4?

Thanks again guys,
Ray

On these bikes there is a wasted spark, that is a plug will fire on a exhaust stroke.

A 4 cylinder 4 stroke will have at least one cylinder producing power at any given time.
